FireWall Suggestions & Torrents

I dont use a Firewall either. Plus i am yet to install an Antivirus program! Might be something else that is causing you problems.

what ISP?
also check some other torrents (the ubuntu one for example) and see if its just those torrents having issues (could be a bad tracker)

I know its easy to forward, its just that I really am so bloody lazy, its just not true!

Anyway, overnight, I ran it with the firewall on the router, and torrents were still ok at a fair pace, so that was cool, but I noticed that emails are not coming in?

I checked and sure enough, they were unabled in the routers firewall and so I have enabled them... Im still not getting any in.

Now, it seems to me, that every time I alter somethign on the Router, it takes a hell of a long time to actually do it... Even if I disconnect and connect and even shut the router and the PC down, I could still be looking at a few hours for anything to actually change??? ( Seemingly ) so, as I said, they are not enabled and so far, after 2 hours Im still not getting anything??? - Obviously I sent myself an EMail as a quick test and thats not come in either... Going out seems fine, as I have sent an email to a mate who got it in a few seconds, but nothing for me.

Let me get this clear... I use Outlook Express and the POP / SMPT are 25/110 and the routers firewall is also set to 25/110 and both are TCP... Everything is TCP isnt it.

What else?

Oh yeah, I just did a NOADWARE and found a spyware ... 2 of the same name... What is it now? Its a SPY---- forget the name but itsa new one on me, and it was severe in NOADWARE but ADAWARE, SPYPOT S&D and Spyware Doctor found nothing... How did that get in? I am bloody annoyed cos like I said, I do anythign and it takes hours to actually change, so I could have been withotu any firewall for several hours? I just dont know?

Anyway, I have to go out in a few, so if I still have no EMails in by then, I will use the DLINK Router for a bit and see what that does for me?

Do you know what?

I setup Win2000 about 2 years ago on my mothers PC, she has no firewall at all, she has AVG antiVirus and NoAdaware Anti-Spyware but thats it.

Has she ever been touched? NO!

The Cow.

Modern routers shouldnt be soo problematic tbh.

Emails shouldnt require any ports to be opened, are you sure your ISP email server isnt having issues?.....

Any time the router seems to block something, turn the firewall off, test it again....... if it works then yeah its the firewall but you can't just assume without testing it as that serves no purpose at all.

Try the other router see if its any better.

I've been hit once or twice myself, once resulted in total loss of my OS..... so it can happen, and although its only very rarely i'd prefer to be the one who chooses when i have to format... :)

Torrents though, i can't honestly believe the router is slowing them down, if you turn the fireall off do speeds suddenly increase?....... i doubt it.....

Try using a Private Torrent site, and download something with a few hundred seeds, you'll soon see how fast your torrents go then... ;)

Regarding using the routers firewall... How do you have it configured??

Most firewalls, when running game X, will see that you have sent a request to server xxx.yyy.zzz.xxx, and any replies from this server will automatically route to your PC.

No configuration required.
No need to forward ANY ports.

Only reason to forward ports is the likes of P2P Software, running an FTP service, allowing Remote Desktop to your PC etc.
For an incoming connection of which you have not sent a request out to yet.

None of the PC's on our home network have firewalls enabled.
The routers firewall stops anything getting to the PC's themselves.
(No spyware or attacks etc)
There are P2P ports forwarded to the 3 PC's which download.
FTP Server + passive ports forwarded to the server... Remote desktop to the spare PC...
But if I want to play Guild Wars, WoW, UT2004 etc... Just run game, connect to server. The router automatically routes all the packets back to me.

Even if both me and my flatmate are playing WoW on the same server... No issues on either.

Either your routers firewall is poop, or it's configured strangely...

EDIT - You do have a random high numbered port forwarded to your P2P software, and it configured to accept connections on that port?
Say 62xxx port number.

Also - Your upload bandwitdth being maxxed will slow down your incoming connections too. And the max connections as advised my other peeps. But your max connections seems to be OK.

Ok where am I?

Right forst of all, I still have not had any EMails.

Possibly my ISP - Sure, of course, thats certainly an possiblity and a probable culprit of course.

I am about to chuck a PC together with a basic broadband Modem just to check if I can get EMails on that, and if I do, then this router ( or its firewall ) is a problem, but if I dont get any EMails then it MUST be the ISP.

Poo firewall in the router? - Yes, perhaps.

Firewall slowing torrents?

Did I say that? - I dont think I did.

What I did say, was that when downloading torrents, Windows' own firewall was killing off internet browsing speeds, but the torrents etc were downloading just fine... No matter what firewall I used, the torrents themselves didnt seem to be affected.

Oh, and yes, I have assigned a port for uTorrent in both utorrent itself and in the router... This is being forwarded correctly.

At this time, everything bar the incoming Emails is working just fine.

The router Im currently with is a Linksys WAG354G.

Hang on... Before I go, can you lot point me in the right directions for the router settings?

Like I said, this router has been used now for well over a year and its been 100% spot on for absolutely everything.

The only issue I am getting now, is in trying to use its firewall instead of a software one.

Is there any particular setting that I need to be aware of?

Or, shall I just hold on to find out if I can get at the Emails through a Modem?

Yeah, I think I will do that actually.

HAHA!

I think I have found the problem.

My Router is fine
My Firewall is fine
My ISP is fine

So what is left?

Well, my EMails are forwarded from one EMail addy to another...

I use me at fatrakoon dot cu dot uk as my EMail and it gets forwarded to damionjones at xln dot co dot uk

So, I have just sent 2 emails out, both to myself but one to the fatrakoon addy and the other to the xln one and I got the xln one !!!

Its that bloody one&one being swines!

I had a letter the other day moaning that the payment had not gone through but thats because I lost my debit card and I had it replaced and so the card I paid for it last time, has now been refused, so, I recon all I need to do, is get in touch with them with my new card details???

I will do that ASAP and update you on how its gone...

In the mean time, any chance one of you can EMail me through both accounts please to verify them.... Surely you can work out the EMail address from the above yeah?

---

Just as a side note, the whole thread was originally for slow internet while running torrents, and now its gone through to not being able to get EMails???

When the hell did that happen?

Funny thing is, that browsing etc is now working just fine ???

I think its all seriously bad timing.

Easiest way to test is just take the router out the loop, run yourself straight to the modem, if problems all clear up, then its the router, if not, then your ISP is having issues.

Process of elimination......... ;)

Email youself dude, lots of places you can get a free email account, make one, send yourself the emails, only take 5 mins.

Yeah, mate, did that as I said in previous post.

the me at fatrakoon email gets forwarded to damionjones at xln

the fatrakoon one does not go through but the xln one does

I checked up on oneandone and my account is locked ( [No disguised swearing! ) cos my debit card was duff ( ost it last year and so I changed it ) and I have just not got round to updating my details with the new card ( Done now ).

So, as far as the emails are concerned, I have found the problem, although its not yet been sorted, so I can receive EMails through my actual XLN account, but not from the forwarded fatrakoon one.
As far as the router is concerned, I have dropped the figures a little again from within utorrent and although my torrents have dropped considerably ( This at this time could simply be anything so Im not too worried just right now as it may just shoot up - it usually does with torrents doesnt it ) and my general browsing is just fine now too!

I think what has happened, is that right at the same time as I try out a few various flavours of Firewall, and then the routers own, and also mess about with torrent settings and so on, all at the same time, 1&1 have just suddenly shut me off, so I was gettign very confused, assuming that it was me and the settings I have changed from/to and as I was unable to get them back etc, I assumed it was me or my firewall...

Extremely bad timing for everythign to suddenly start getting silly on me.

Anyway, I think that everything will come back into place once 1&1 sort out the account forwarding etc which probably wont be for a few days now ( swines ) but once thats done, I will be back on track as I was a few days ago.

Many thanks all.

I would just like to add a quick one to this before it gets lost in the past.

I have now been running with only the firewall on the router and nothing in Windows itself.

I usually get half a dozen or so entries in my spyware killers... AdAware SE usually picks some non-critical stuff up here and there.

However, I have NOT bothered to run any of them for a couple of weeks now, and only just now I have run them...

I ran
Spyware Doctor
NoAdware
AdAware SE
SpyBot S&D

And have a guess how much stuff I found?

Like I said, half a dozenin a day is usual... More likely a dozen really.

...

It found NONE!

My Torrents have ( Until a couple of days agoa ctually, which is why I decided to check for spyware ) been coming in faster than ever.

So, while the topis was not specifically about using the Firewall on the router as such, it did in fact lead me to use that and I have now seen the error of my ways... I will NEVER bother with a software firewall of ANY kind.

Many thanks all.

Well, no, I have had no problems as such before either myself.

I have been using torrents for quite some years now, always been fine for me.

I have used BlackIce and for the last few years until *** other week, I have been using XP's own which has been just fine, and then ZoneAlarm was a trial.

I have moved over to the Hardware Firewall purely over possibly non-firewall related issues, and its been there for a couple of weeks, and now I ahve seen that I have had absolutely ZERO infections at all...

Previously, I would get something, but not in the last 2 weeks or so.
