Firewire 800 slowing things down

I have a Firewire 800 Card reader and when I'm importing the photo's from it to iPhoto it slows my iMac right down and opening windows seems really sluggish and takes a few seconds to respond, I would have thought my Mac would have been fine doing a few things at once. Its the 3Ghz one with 4GB Ram

What model?

I remember on my old PPC Mac file transfers would really slow down the ability to use the machine.

What model iMac you mean or firewire card reader ?

All sorted just changed the iphoto location to a external hard drive and it fine now.
