Firewire 800 what devices need this speed.

Well, was talking to a baffoon that was trying to tell me that his external hard drives going to work faster if he fits a 1394b card to his pc.
It's got me stumped as to what if anything actually exceeds the limits of 1394 apart from I suppose using it to connect another PC.

Any ideas ?

400mbps/8 = 50MB/s
800mbps/8 = 100MB/s

I guess there may be a slight benefit depending on how fast the drive is.

I always thought that the main use of Firewire or IE1394 was for digital cameras and video editing but I don't know about them exceeding the bandwidth because they would be designed to have the limits of the hardware inbuilt.
