Firewire for Laptop?

Hi there,

My laptop has a PCMCIA slot for Firewire etc. which means I can connect my Firewire devices to my laptop if I get a Firewire PCMCIA card for it.

However, the reason why I want the Firewire is to connect an audio interface for recording music to the laptop. I'm just wondering if this PCMCIA will 'reduce' the speed of data exchange compared to the Firewire ports on desktops and it is very important for the data for transfer at high speeds when recording 8+ tracks at the same time to ensure there is no 'latency'.

Any ideas on that?

There are a lot of issues with firewire and audio devices on laptops. A lot of people say that it is essential to have a motherboard that uses the Texas Instruments chipset (although I think some others are now OK) even if you are using a PCMCIA/ExpressCard - Firewire adapter. I am by no means an expert on this and all I can say is do as much investigating as you can before you go ahead with it.

http://www.kvraudio.com is probably one of the most knowledgeable computer music forums I know and would suggest it as a good place to start. Also the forum for whichever DAW software you use will likely have a group of people who know what they are talking about. (I hope the mods on this forum don't mind links to other forums.)
