Firing on all cylinders again!

I'm starting the Mondeo Krew back up again after Fox stepped down to take up BMW-related activities.
I'll re-join. Just bought a Mk2 V6 Ghia X Estate, 2001 X. £740 with 4 months T&T, 103k miles, pretty much 1 owner from new (Technically 3 as it was Ford demo to 3000 miles, then the old guy for 100k, then his middle-aged daughter for a couple of months.)
ST200 are great value for money I reckon, I couldn't find insurance though, prob due to being under 25.

I have a few small maintenance jobs to do on it, made a start today. Replaced the idler pulley as the bearing was worn, aux drive belt (the other shredded when I took the car to Birmingham in the week, I'm hoping due to the worn idler pulley as now it won't do it again) and water pump belt.

I want to check out the status of the water pump impeller at some point so may as well replace the coolant at the same time.
I want to fit new discs and pads all round, just ordering these. The front discs were an advisory on the last MOT.
I also need to do this wiring fix on the alternator as have pulsing dash lights. The alternator was replaced last year which is nice as they are prone to failing around 80-100k on the V6.

My IMRC works lovely so I am considering relocating it to under the battery tray so that it stays this way. I believe heat from the engine can kill them off.

Will give it a full service at some point too.

He could either be referring to my old 525i Sport or the V8 I was interested in!

I'd rather a 540 over the Mondeo tbh but I think a 525 would certainy be eclipsed by the Ford.

Ultimately though, personally speaking, I'd rather the 525 - if it were the only choice - simply becauase its RWD.

I hear you.

I loved my 525i but it was 16 years old and you could see that it was past its best. Any E34 at this price is going to be at least as tired.

I stand more of a chance with the ST200 when it comes to it a) not exploding and b) selling it on / PXing it. I don't really have any intention of keeping this car for more than a year (and if I do, it will be the longest I have ever kept a car) so I chose to go with the mundano.

There is also c) I wont be going through rear tyres like they are going out of fashion. I used to kick the back end of the 525i out all the time (loving the LSD) and made short work of the rears as a result. I don't think I'd have the restraint to resist the urge to do the same again and right now I could do without that, so by taking away the RWD element I'm more likely to be looking through the windscreen at where I am going....

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing your choice. Far from it.

Tbh such a car would be a far better bet for me than my 328i....

Age indeed takes its toll etc etc, mines not immune from that alas.

Such a shame Ford don't do RWD any more, or more to the point, people don't know how to drive RWD properly....

No LSD with my 328i, I'm amazed its still on the tyres I bought it with tbh, kicking out the rear end is such fun.

Bloody hard with FWD mind you - I treid often with my old RS Turbo.... :o :D

All? Still two short of a picnic by all means and accounts :p

I jest, though, looks a great example. My uncle had one for a long time and I was always quite impressed with it, he sold it in the end though due to an ongoing quest for more power - there wasn't much he could do with it.

I think you can still find a good E34 for sensible money, though, but it does take time and effort to find a good'un and that's what stops most people. Mine had done 143,000 but had FBMWSH and drove (I kid not) like it was new, absolutely superb drive and utterly bulletproof. The only thing that bugged me was it was missing AC - still, not the end of it all. Cost £800 :)

Completely unmarked as well, did look like a new car when cleaned up, which was remarkable really. Obviously very well cared for in it's life.

None of this timing belt malarky either :D

I hear that, Alfa used to use duplex chains, then the prats moved to belts. :(

My favourite chain is the type Honda use on the CBR600RR, very clever.

Lashout you do have seemingly infinite luck in finding fantastic cars at idiotic prices :p

We all see these bargains once in a while, but where we usually say "This is a really bad idea." or "I can't really afford that now, but if I could I'd totally buy it." Lashout says "I'll get my wallet."
