firmware 2.36 out now

I once again maintain my opinion that all these recent small updates have contained parts of the 2.40 big update in order to save on a huge influx of bandwidth usage when 2.4 comes out.

No it doesn't work like that. Any update will be 130mb ish. They don't update the flash in parts, its a full flash everytime.

What exactly do you base that statement on? It's perfectly possible to update core parts of the operating system in preparation for a future update, surely they don't reflash the ENTIRE operating system for every update? That would be a huge waste of bandwidth.

all of the updates have been around the same size have they not? but you two are talking about two different things. it's possible to update parts at a time, but the update process is still a full write, and involves a full download.

Yup they reflash the whole OS everytime.

I cannot help but think that 2.40 is further away than most people think. I think Sony is trying to stopgap us with this 2.36.

meh, we'll see. at least everybody will stop moaning about it when we get it. not sure what else they'll have to moan about then - the sony blog would be strangely devoid of posts:p

ingame XMB, whats the big deal anyway. If i'm playing a game I don't want to go into the XMB to view pictures and listen to music else I would just quit the game.

Are you kidding me?! "What is the big deal?"

How about getting what Xbox360 has had all along. In game messages, chat, trophies (achievements), the ability to accept friend requests etc.

well, none of that is really going to change my life lol. i think a lot of it is purely based on the fact that the 360 has it and the ps3 doesnt. ingame chat is great, thats welcome. music i couldnt give a stuff about really. its certainly not a big thing for me at any rate.

It's awesome. Checking messages without coming out of the game? I love that feature on 360.

Not that bothered about playing music though, I like to listen to in game soundtracks and sounds, rather than add my own.
