After reading a couple of guides on HDR I decided to give it ago. I really like the effect but not sure if I have overdone it. Any comments would be great.

- wonky horizon
- no subject to speak of
- hdr is overdone and adds little to the shot

I think you have to be really selective with the subject when deciding upon making HDR images. Try going in town and taking some shots of tall buildings at funny angles and then using them for HDR ... have seen some really nice shots along these lines recently; will try and dig them out for you. Most important thing is to not give up .... keep trying and you will naturally see improvement.

agree with the previous comments, but as a sole attempt at HDR, you seem to have cornered it. Personally, I think there's very few times/places for HDR, but done properly, you can produce some spectacular results - check out vanilladays for some lovely HDR.

If you want to check out some drastically overdone HDR, check out stuckincustoms

Which bit of the photo do you feel was too bright/dark and thus you need to make an HDR image? As far as I can see some simple photoshoping with use of the shadow/highlights too would have been far more sensible.

This is why people aren't getting the whole HDR point. You need to understand why its needed before applying it to an image.

The best example of this is a landscape shot where originally you are either getting one of two things right:
1, properly exposed sky but dark foreground
or
2, properly exposed foreground but blown out sky.

While I am not insulting anyones images here I am merely saying where you should be using HDR and the image above requires no HDR. It needs nothing but if the details in the person were dark then its where you would use fill in flash.

Agreed

As others know me feelings on HDR I'll not go in to them again lol

Its pretty well exposed to start with so all the information to make it look a bit better si already there. Process it as a normal image rather than trying to add high dynamic range that isn't actually there and ruining it :)
