First attempt at processing

Ok I've had DSLR's for a while now but always shot in jpeg. Now I've had my 5D a while I've decided to try lightroom. Looking for advice and pointers to help me a long please.

The castle picture is close to what I wanted but it was a bright sun almost directly on me and I had no filters or hoods

I'll have another go when i'm home next week using your tips.
