First attempt at Seascape...

Apparently CPL's don't work well for UWA's

I use one occasionally on my 10-22 from time to time. Was using it last week when I had a family day out at the beach. Problem is with the WA the sky can go from light to dark and maybe looks a bit odd. Wouldn't put me off using it though.

Prefer your 2nd set of pics to the first ones, I find the first ones a bit empty or something and quite like the effects in the second set.

Do you have a CPL I get the feeling from your shots that you don't and for me that with an ND grad would give you a much nicer end result than the current long exposure fad.

Fad? People have been doing long exposure photos for god knows how long. When I first registered on these boards, there was someone posting long exposure seascapes! If fads last decades, then yeah, it's a fad :D

Also, rather embarrassingly I've just remembered that I bought a bigstopper a few months ago and adapters, and I haven't used it yet :D

It's a fad as in everyone seems to be doing it at the moment, much like HDR was a fad a year or two back and selective colouring before that. Long exposure is one of the in things at the moment like tilt shift wedding photos both will have their moment in the sun and then go back to being just another photography technique people use from time to time.

Of course some people have been doing these things for years and others will continue to do them in years to come doesn't stop the current upsurge being a fad.

Then this fad will stand the test of time. Unlike selective colouring etc.
HDR still looks good if it's done right and looks more natural. I think it's the over the top HDR processing that was the fad, which never looked good even when it was popular.

On a side note. I'm hardly going to stop enjoying taking such pictures just because they are popular at the moment. That doesn't make any sense.

I've only ever done one HDR shot. Well one that I thought it worked on, and now looking back I'm not sure it did. It definitely has its place, but is massively overused. Long exposure however, serves a very real purpose (well, I suppose you could argue that about HDR, in the correct circumstances).

I can't say I've noticed an increase in long exposure photos myself. There are obviously more people taking photos now than 8 years ago, so there may be more online, but when you look at photo sites/forums there is as much of other styles of photography too. Well, that I've seen anyway, but it's not like I go out of my way looking for them.

I'll have to try something soon. If the weather is nice I may pop down to Erdigg and try some river/landscape stuff.

I was there today.

Portland as a whole is an epic place for photography. Good spots all over the island. There is a high viewpoint as well looking over Chesil Beach and the harbour.

In fact, Dorset rocks full stop.

I wanted to take pics, but unfortunately sold my 450D a while back. Getting very strongly tempted by the new D3200 though. That 24MP sensor could make for some epic seascapes.

Love that lighthouse shot! Very cool how that turned out, don't think I've seen anything like that before. What was the exposure length on it?
