In here and out there.
I missed a few times then my aim improved. ;)

moon1.jpg

Details:
400D, Tv - 1/1000s, Faithful, ISO 200.
Sigma 70-300, 300mm, f5.6, AF.

Interestingly, if I switched the lens to MF and shifted to infinity the shot would be out of focus.

Processed in Canons DPP software, 100% crop.

Any ideas and thoughts on how I can improve this one?
How can I take shots of the moon with the stars visible behind it?

Cheers all. :)

You probably cant :p Theres such a difference in contrast it would be extremely difficult to capture stars and the moon at once.
Thats a pretty good attempt, it's a little soft, perhaps because the lens is wide open - I've heard that less expensive (i.e. sub £1k!) lenses sometimes are a little soft when wide open at full extension.

Probably the best shot you're gonna get with that setup. I've got the same lens and would like to get something a bit better but I don't have the £1k+ for a decent one.

You'd need to go out of town somewhere with little artificial light would bring out the stars more.

Vipernet: That's a good idea, it's a pity I don't drive, I did try taking shots of the stars but the light pollution was horrific. :(

Felix: Aye, I was getting warmed up (or chilled down if you look at it another way!) for the eclipse. :)
