I've not really been able to make up my mind as to what I want after I pass my test. I've long wanted an SV650S as I've had mates with them and they always looked fun to ride. I then rode a ER6-n briefly (car park type assesment) and really quite liked that as well. I quite like the idea of having a cruiser as well...

Thoughts are get an SV650 as they can be bought for about £1100, they seem pretty hardy as well, and then make up my mind after that.

Any thoughts or suggestions as to alternatives? I don't want a full on sports as it would be an everyday bike and don't want short service intervals

I dont think riding an SV650 will create such an impression that a rider would never consider any other engine configuration again.

I think it depends what you like to begin with. I myself Like V-twins. One day would love to get a Firestorm or TL1000 and a cruiser type so I can go between the two

I was looking at hornets as it happens. However you can get the carb'd version of the SV with about 15k-30K miles about 10 years old for about £1200

Seems to be down to preference going by the posts. I'm not looking for full on performance for first bike (but may well do for my 2nd ;) ) so leaning towards the SV tbh

if I was you, in your current price bracket, pick a sports bike, a tourer bike, some sort of inbetween like ER6/SV650 and take each one out, they will feel completely different and see which feels right!

Don't get me wrong...I'm going to get as many test rides as I can out of the showrooms etc before I get a bike :D

I'm planning on doing my full test early next year when the weather gets a bit better and I was going to hold out and spend about 4-4.5k but I think I'm going to go for a cheaper SV initially.

Looks a lot of bike for the money.

It also looks like the injected models (nose is more pointy, where the carb'd versions are more rounded) are coming down in price now. Seen a few for about £1,500
