Hi All

First time poster here and I have recently built my first rig! Apologies in advance if I come off as a noob.

I've built my computer by basically just watching YouTube videos. Pretty daunting at first, but I've found then if you've ever put a lot of IKEA furniture together, you can build a PC too! :)

However, I came across a video recently which suggested I should overclock my RAM speed to 3200mhz to improve my PC's performance. I was able to follow along well enough - I was able to access my BIOS and enable the 'XMP' profile which I believe is required to boost the RAM speed.

But - I can't seem to boost the speed past 2666mhz, even with the XMP profile enabled. I'm pretty sure the RAM I bought is capable of doing this (I purchased Corsair Vengeance Pro 16gb (2x8gb) DDR4 3200mhz C16 XMP 2.0).. So am I doing something incorrect on the bios to overclock this?

My motherboard bios is a Gigabyte b460m ds3h - the youtube video I watched where the guy clocked his to 3200 is a b450m, so the bios interface is slightly different, but the gist of the process is pretty much the same, so I'm just wondering what I'm doing wrong?

Grateful for any thoughts/advice!

Cheers
-CCK

B450 is unlocked so you can set whatever you want, but B460 is locked to 2666 with i5 and 2933 with i7/i9.

Thanks for the quick response .. my cpu is an i5 10400 .. I would basically need a new motherboard to go up to 3200 ram?

Is the difference between 2666 and 3200 buying a whole new motherboard do you think?

Whats the rest of your system spec, do you have a ssd ?

Yes - specs are:

CPU - i5 10400
Mobo - Gigbyte b460m ds3h
RAM - 2x8gb corsair vengeance ddr4 3200mhz
PSU - EVGA 600w
SSD - Samsung 860 evo 500gb ssd
GPU - Nvidia GeForce 2060 super founders edition

That's the meat of it - 3 easythreed rgb fans on the inside front panel and a Corsair H60 AIO attached to the exhaust fan slot (with the fan that came with the cooler exhausting air through the radiator)

Looks solid as long as you have enough storage was going suggest putting you games on a ssd or m2 drive.

Thanks mate

Quick Q while I have you guys here - is it worth upgrading my 16gb ram to 32gb on this current setup (i.e. the board not allowing for overclocking over 2666mhz)? Or would I be better served upgrading the cpu/mobo before jumping to 32gb ram?

Probablly not worth upgrading to 32gb yet but check your memory usage While gaming before you decide.

I would not be upgrading your cpu and motherboard its solid option and you wont gain that much more performance in games.

Wait for ddr5.
