Built a gaming PC a couple of months ago, hadn't bothered with PC's for quite a few years so had to re-learn everything, set myself a budget of around £600 but ended up going over that a bit.

This is what I went with:

CPU: i5 6500
GPU: XFX R9 390
Mobo: Gigabyte Z170 Gaming K3
RAM: Corrsair Vengeance 8GB 2400mhz
PSU: EVGA 650 GQ Modular
SSD: Toshiba 240GB
HDD: 300GB 7200rpm (from old laptop)
Case: Thermaltake Versa H25
Fans: 1x Thermaltake, 1x AF120, 2x SP120

Then I read about being able to overclock the non-K CPU's, so decided I'd want to mess around with that one day and started looking at CPU coolers. It turned out most air coolers wouldn't fit in my case, so ended up going with the Corsair H45. Haven't overclocked yet but CPU temps have dropped by 15+ degrees.

In hindsight if I'd thought about things a bit more I would have been less strict on the budget, bought a 6600k instead of 6500, a different case that could fit a decent air cooler, and maybe some different RAM, I see a lot of people using faster RAM than 2400mhz but it seems to be fine.

Overall I think I've spent around £700 total, it's performed well so far, so how did I do for my first build, should I have done anything different? Would I have been better off spending more money in some areas and less in others?

Looks very capable for the money. And the 6500 is still a very good processor, and will likely come close to the 6600k when overclocked. I spent a similar amount of money on my machine two years ago and it doesn't touch yours.

Hopefully it lasts me a few years then. But I already want to build a custom case and a full watercooling loop for absolutely no reason lol.
