Hi, I've been thinking recently about building myself a new rig as the one I built last is now showing it's age when trying to play the newer games that are coming out. The system I have now is using a Q6600 Intel quad core and a Nvidia 8800GTX and 4 Gig Corsair memory.

The new system I'm hoping to put together pretty soon shall be...

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H Socket 1155 VGA DVI HDMI DisplayPort 7.1 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

CPU: Intel Core i7 2700K 3.50GHz Socket 1155 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor

RAM: Corsair 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz Vengeance Blue Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V

PSU: Corsair 850W HX Modular PSU

Case: NZXT Phantom 410 White Case

CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9900-MAX Blue Intel Socket 775, 1155, 1156, 1366 AMD AM2, AM2+, AM3 Processor Cooler

I'm not purchasing the GPU just yet but I'm thinking of a Nvidia GTX 680. Does anybody know of any compatibility issues I may encounter with the above components or maybe some other suggestions? Thanks :)

Well I would say primarily I would like it for games, I would like to hook it up to the main TV in the living room so I can play the latest games with little hiccups. My budget is around £850. Thanks :)

No, I wont need a OS thanks. Ummm I never really gave the i5's a look in, what's the differences? I'm also trying to shave down the price a little, can you recommend cheaper alternatives?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gainward GeForce GTX 670 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £299.99
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £184.99
1 x ASRock Z77 Extreme4 M Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £101.99
1 x XFX 650W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £72.98
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 32MB Cache - OEM (ST31000524AS) £69.95
1 x Zalman Z9 Plus Tower Case with Fan Controller - Black £49.99
1 x GeIL Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD38GB1600C11DC) £39.95
1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £17.99
Total : £852.83 (includes shipping : £12.50).

The i7 has hyperthreading, which does nothing in games and the i7 costs quite a bit more than the i5's. If you wanted prices even lower, could drop the graphics card to a 7850 from a GTX 670, although GTX 670's perform a lot better than the 7850. The 7850 costs £173.

I notice that motherboard you have chose is quite a lot cheaper than the one I have picked, is there much difference between the two? Also would a 600W PSU cause me any problems in the long run with GPU's getting more and more power hungry? Thanks for the advice guys :D

Re GPU's getting more and more power hungry, the trend is starting to go the other way, the new nVidia models (6xx) are some of the least power demanding models I think... of course, this could be completely wrong, but I'm pretty sure I saw a graph somewhere...

Edit to add: This is a graph showing LOAD power consumption:

And idle power consumption:

Thanks for the advice, I had a look over the ATi 7950 but comparing it to the GTX 670/680 I know I would regret not buying the Nvidia in the long run. Going from some of your advice I have now changed a few items.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H Socket 1155 VGA DVI HDMI 8 Channel Audio ATX

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache

RAM: Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz Vengeance Memory Kit CL9 1.5V

PSU: Coolermaster GX 750W PSU

Case: NZXT Phantom 410 Black Case

CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9900-MAX Blue Intel Socket 775, 1155, 1156, 1366 AMD AM2, AM2+, AM3 Processor Cooler

HDD: Corsair 120GB Force 3 SSD - SATA-III 2.5" - Read 550MB/s Write 510MB/s 85K IOPS Fast Performance

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce 3X 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card

As you can see I have now added the GPU and HDD along with changing some of the other components to save some money. I'm now just umm'ing and arr'ing about if I should submit my order lol...

The hight of the RAM, tall ram and a large heatsink which has a fan that overhangs the memory slots is a recipe for trouble.

Aha! I never even gave that a thought, thanks for bringing that to light. Saved me some stressful times :P
