Ok...finally got my first build computer up and running but... it keeps going into a cycle of
" Verifying DMI Pool Data " and then nothing...does this take a long time to carry out...it seems stopped at that point and deosn't respond to any keys.

I did try and load Windows XP Pro and it got so far and then refused to go further.
I have set the first boot up device to CDROM in the bios.
I also get a single "bleep" when I boot it up if that helps!

Can anyone shed any light on what I need to do next or talk me through so that I can get it right?

Could be a number of different things - can you post your specs please?

Edit: Iirc a single BIOS beep is ok and (when I had a speaker connected) I used to hear this after the BIOS had finished.
So this could mean it is a problem with your hard-disk, e.g. Corrupt boot files on the computer, Boot devices not set properly, Connections loose/disconnected or worse case the Drive is failing.

Have you turned on SMART monitoring?

Well it's a brand new drive - I was trying to set it up for the first time. I went into the bios and set it up to from boot from CD

I've downloaded the manual for your motherboard and as suspected:
"One single short beep will be heard if no problem is detected at system startup".

Edit: It sounds like your XP install went wrong and your PC can't find the boot files on the Hard-disk.
A quick google for "Verifying DMI Pool Data" revealed a number of people fixed this either by clearing the CMOS and/or updating the BIOS to the latest version.

So I would suggest:

<removed install steps after OP has now installed Windows>

I'll do a bit more digging for you on the DMI Pool message :)

Thanks for taking the time...I have tried clearing the CMOS and actually after holding the F12 key down and selecting the SATA hard drive, got it to boot from the CD/DVD Writer.

I attempted to install my 2003 version of Windows XP Pro and it gets as far checking everything out then just at startup, it comes up with a blue screen telling me there is a defective hard drive or it's not correctly set.

It's either my copy of widows is defective or possibly the new hard drive is DOA. I have no other way of checking right now.
I'm just wondering if my copy of windows is so old it now won't recognise modern hardware?

Glad to see you are getting further :)
Your XP disc is probably fine, but you might need to provide a driver for your SATA drive during the install.

I'm afraid I've only installed XP onto IDE drives and Windows 7 onto SATA, so cannot help any further :(
Perhaps someone in the Windows forum could help? Cheers :)

Thanks again..
That is what I thought about with regard to Ide drives as opposed to SATA... the SATA drive is OEM so didn't come with any drivers and I've never installed my Windows XP onto a SATA drive as when I changed computers, it was pre-installed so didn't need my copy!

I'll have an ask around to see if I can get anywhere!
