Hey all. Hope everyone is doing ok.

i havent posted in a while (not sure why my account shows 1 post, should be allot more :)) so putting this under the new section till i can find my feet again.

So im looking to put together a small build for my sister. My last build was some time ago with everyones help form the forum and its still going strong. It was a Core i7-6700K, gtx 1070, 16gb ddr4 and fully watercooled with a custom loop.
As you can see thats a few years old now so i am very much out the loop (excuse the pun :D) of the latest and greatest.

She has a budget of around £700. That would need to include a screen. I am keen to let her pick out her own keyboard and mouse etc.
  • Prefers the look of a grey/steel/ black case over white. Something small enough to fit on a desktop. I am currently on a enthoo evolve case but she would like it smaller then that.
  • Mostly plays city builder games and Sims 4 would be its main use (not really into AAA titles)
  • she loves the look of my rig but doesnt want the custom loop. So possibly a nice looking cooler or a AIO if the budget stretches that far.

Happy to help as best i can but as you can see my last build was circa 2018 so not sure where to start.

Thank you so much all.

That's a really small budget for a gaming PC including the screen and peripherals, you'd probably be better off shopping for a prebuild or a used PC.

This is my attempt, though I've gone maybe £100 over budget once you include the mouse/keyboard that aren't in my spec:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £740.88 (includes delivery: £0.00)

You could get it under budget by downgrading the graphics card and buying a 1080p monitor.

I don't recommend buying a cheaper graphics card because the RX 6600 is really the entry-level for decent playability in newer games and I don't think the saving on a 6500 XT, GTX 1650 or 3050 6GB is worth it, considering the impact on longevity. I know you said that the requirements aren't that high, but you never know when she'll fancy playing something newer.

I'd also strongly recommend getting 32GB of RAM as those kind of building games can quickly start munching it if you have long play sessions and install mods.

Managed to find my old account.

Thank you so much for that.
Do see what you mean. Might have to drop the screen potentially and use one of my old ones for now to try squeeze a bit more out of the components.

Will take a look at the list now.

So we have had a bit of a sit down and decided together that she can get to £1000 with a screen and keyboard etc now.
Hopefully that will get us some more longevity out of the build and a bit move visual appeal,

I’ll try edit the original post as well.
Need to figure out if I can combine my 2 accounts too but that’s another issue.

Thank you for all the help so far

Cool, £1,000 is a much healthier budget with the screen included!

The changes I've made are:
- Upgraded the i3-12100F to a i5-12400F, this gives you 2 extra cores (for a total of 6). I think the CPU will last a bit longer because of this change and could be handy with building games.
- Upgraded 16GB to 32GB of memory. It is probably the first thing that'll want upgrading otherwise, so I definitely recommend it.
- Switched the RX 6600 8GB to a RTX 3060 12GB. This gets you more performance, adds DLSS compatibility for upscaling and the extra 4GB of VRAM is useful for playing at 1440p. The change is not massive if there's something to be gained elsewhere. You could also get the XFX 6750 XT for ~£300, which is a very nice step up from either card, however you'd also need a different case because it won't fit in the Trinity Mini.
- Upgraded the storage from 1TB to 2TB. This is obviously not necessary, but gives more headroom for more games and less faffing around uninstalling.
- Added a cooler upgrade with RGB shiny. You can shop around and choose a cooler to her liking if you want to, or just use the CPU's box cooler which is sufficient. Edit: the i35 cooler is 0.5mm too tall for the case, so best to choose something else anyway.
- Added a keyboard/mouse bundle, just to show the pricing.

If going for any sort of longevity I'd not touch AM4 or Intel tbh, both are essentially dead sockets at this point. AM5 such as the below will be supported until 2027-2028 last I checked.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £797.86 (includes delivery: £0.00)

The CPU comes with a passable HSF, but if she wants a bit more bling look at the Thermalright Assassin King 120SE (RGB versions in white and black) which can be found for £15. I'd not spend £330 on a 7600XT either, you can find an 6750XT for that and frankly city builders tend to be more CPU dependent anyway thus my focus on a newer platform and stronger CPU over GPU power.

There's plenty left over for a monitor and peripherals of her choice, Windows can be run without a licence with minor functionality loss, or alternatively keys can be sourced for £5-10.

If you can make it stretch I would consider spending a little more on one of the following motherboards over the Asus Prime:

Hi all,

Thank you so much for the help above. Sorry i have been away for a few weeks so i am only just getting back to this.

Thank you for the advise on the Intel vs am4 sockets

I have gone for a bit of a hybrid approach here with your suggestions. My sister has now picked out the lian li case. So that opens it up to atx size motherboards. Do you have a suggestion on what would work best, please ?

We decided on a monitor around 27" would be plenty for now.

once we have this nailed down, i will chip in and buy her an AIO and some fans to complete the look. (will need help on that for sure, i have only ever done hard pipe water cooling.).

If anyone else has any other suggestions on how best to get the most out of the £1000 that would be ace.

There is no motherboard in your build.

Memory I would suggest you get expo memory as it's made for AM5.

Case is expensive so I've done a resuffle to get a better GPU..

Motherboard is out of stock at Overclockers but for £150 I would get the

Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX

If you can add £50 to this build swap the GPU for the

ASRock RX6750 XT Challenger Pro 12GB OC which can be had for £300 which is way better than the 6600.

That case needs a small form factor (SFX) PSU, normal size will not fit. It also comes with no fans.
Brillaint. Thank you so much for that.
Thats why i have been on this forum for over 10 years (old account) So much amazing information.

I will change that over to a small form factor PSU.

So just to update everyone
We are still looking to keep the budget to £1000 (Not including fans or a AIO, i will buy those seporatly as a gift for my sister)

The only firm part i cant change is now the case, That is the one she has picked out and i would like to stick to that is its her first PC.

I wasnt able to find the ASRock RX6750 XT Challenger Pro 12GB OC which can be had for £300 as sugested. So changed to the 7600 over the 6600 i had previous.

I still need to find a motherboard to suit as well.

But just want to say thank so you much to everyone again. Would have been totally lost without everyones help. It has been years since my last build.

Your best bet for a motherboard will be to find a decent deal on an M-ATX B650 board as the case supports them, you'll end up paying more for a comparable ITX and would gain nothing from it anyway.

Something like the following:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £159.98 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Cheapest decent board currently on OCUK.

The Asus Prime B650M-A WIFI II for £130 would work well enough, but for the sake of £30 I'd pony up the extra personally.

Especially in a multi window case like that, the Asus isn't the prettiest board and it seems your sister fancies a bit of bling.

Look at Thermalright for AIO's and fans, they offer some excellent value and well performing products at the moment.

Thank you so much. I have added that now. It takes her slightly over the budgert bit its probably worth it with the added cost of the case and the upgrade of the 6600 to the 7600. May relook at the monitor to try bring it down a smidge

I do need to get my head around the lighting controllers and compatability tonight. Lots of reading to do. Would a double rad AIO be sufficent for that ryzen or would i need a tripple ?

Again thank you to everyone for the help so far.

You may be better getting a 24 " monitor if you gaming at 1080p the larger the screen the more stretch out the pixels are, .

You don't need an aio to cool that CPU it comes with a cooler but a 240mm will cover most upgrades or you could get an air cooler around £20 .

While I appreciate you like that case and adding fans ,aio ,etc the money could be spent wiser .

Thank you for that.
I 100% agree with what you are saying in regards to not needing the aio etc. Thats why i have said lets get the most we can from the £1000 budget she has and i will gift the AIO and rgb fans(sepoaratly) so it not eating into her £1000 budget.

i will look at that 24" in a second i think thats a good sugestion. I am relooking at cases to see if there is anything else silimar. Think its one shes seen on youtube and has taken a linking to it hence her choice. Also it probably fits her space better. She wanted something smaller then my enthoo evolve. If anyone has any other sugestions to get a bit more out the build i am all ears. Think we are going to go over everything this weekend and order on monday
