Hi, First post here, and first ever build, but it isn't going well at all.

My spec I am trying to build is as follows -

ASrock pro3 z68 ATX motherboard
Intel Core i5 2500k CPU
Arctic cooling freezer 7 Pro rev.2
Ati Radeon 5450 Graphics card
8 Gb ram corsiar XMS3 (2 x 4Gb)
450w power supply (old FSP group inc, Model no ATX-450PNF)
Standard 108Mbps NIC
3 port firewire card.

I built the system on the bench (outside of the case) with only the CPU, Arctic cooling fan, RAM, and PSU connected. Tried attaching the old power switch from my old PC and even tried 'shorting' with a screwdriver to bridge the connections on the Motherboard but no signs of life at all, No post no noise, no fans spinning, nothing:confused:

The power supply works fine on my old build of a ASUS p5vd2-MX Mobo, Intel Core2 Duo CPU 2 Gb ram, But my first thought was is a 450W PSU not enough for the new build?

The only sign of life I get is, turn everything on, power switch, etc, turn power off at mains, then press power on switch on case and fan briefly spins (I think to discharge any residual power)

I have since tried powering on with the CPU supplied fan in place of the Arctic Freezer, I have tried with or without the RAM fitted, and tried different slots, I have tried powering on with or without the Graphics card fitted.

My though is now either an insufficient PSU or a DOA motherboard / CPU.
Any thoughts? I feel like throwing it all away!!!

You haven't said how many times the PSU is connected.

I killed my first mobo trying to use a screwdriver instead of a jumper, though you'll know when you kill it that way!

450W should be sufficient for this setup but I wonder if the CPU needs all 8 pin EPS-12V filled rather than just half. Motherboards haven't traditionally been fussy about this but maybe they are starting to become so.

Just a guess.

Wow, that was a quick reply!

No noises at all, no beeps, clicks, nothing.

Double checked all power connections, it has the standard 24 (20+4) power connection on the motherboard, along with the 4 pin extra plug next to the CPU (although the motherboard has an 8 pin socket (this is ok according to the motherboard manual) The graphics card does not require and power directly from the PSU as it has no socket.

If 450W is enough, is this a DOA motherboard?

Everything worked fine with the same PSU in the old machine, the only difference was the ASUS p5vd2-mx mobo has a 4 pin extra power connections as opposed to the ASrock pro3 z68 mobo having 8 pin socket.

is the power into the correct 4 pins of the 8 pin socket ?

I've had trouble with not filling all 8 pins in the CPU EPS sockets before.

450W would be enough but I must say that's not a brand of PSU I have experience of. Was it producing 450W and sufficient Ampage when it was new? What about now?

Unsure of what is being pumped out of the PSU nowadays, but still powers up my old PC.
As for the 4 /8 pin extra power connector, there is a handy sticker which covers the left hand 4 pins stating that if using a 4 pin plug plug into the right hand side as per the mobo manual.
No i'm thinking if 450W is enough, is it a case of not enough going to the extra 4/8 pin socket, i.e. would 450W be enough IF there was an 8 pin plug connected near the CPU?
Would this cause no signs of life?

Avoid budget PSUs.

Spend a bit more for a quality unit. Ignore the wattage ratings really. 750W budget brand might have crap ampage on the 12V rails and put out less Wattage than a 550W quality brand.

I cannot speak for the ones linked but a 20 note PSU screams *BOOM* to me :p

Thanks for the feedback everyone, so is the general consensus a faulty / insufficient PSU as opposed to a DOA mobo or CPU? don't want to return either of these items if there is nothing wrong with them.
As I said earlier would the insufficient PSU cause no signs of life but after turning off at the mains then pressing the power switch then getting a slight whirl of the CPU fan?

In the meantime I shall look into a better PSU.

Hmm, you said you didn't get any beeps?

Have you made sure the CPU heatsink is mounted correctly and the fan plugged in to the right header on the motherboard? I've had some silly issues with this before, so to be honest, I'd just try completely rebuilding the mobo/cpu/ram/heatsink/psu back up a second time (take it all apart, put it back together), just to double check it's not working :s

kd

I have tried stripping it all down again and built for a second time either with the Intel CPU fan or the Arctic freezer fan, I am using thermal compound, and no beeps or noises at all.
It is seeming more and more like a PSU or am I talking myself into it:p!!!

i had similar issues before on 2 occassions and i had to change the power supply before i got anything out of it... looks like i'm talking you in to it too now ;)

is there a label on your current psu that will give any more details ?

apologies if i've missed it, but if you attempt to post without ram in do you have a speaker connected to identify if it beeps to indicate it knows theres no ram.

if possible same with out the cpu in.

if your getting no beeps with all ram/cpu removed that would indicate to me its mobo rather than power.

Had a bit of a breakthrough!!!!

Remembered I had an ooooollllllddddddd PC from around 1999 in the loft, got that out had a look at it's PSU, it is 245W, same make as my 450W PSU but with only a 20 pin main power connector instead of a 20+4 pin connector along with a 4 pin extra power connector. Anyway connected this 245W PSU to my new build even though it only had a 20 pin connector, and it burst into life first time!!!! it beeped, fan went round like a proper working PC!! (sorry getting delirious now:rolleyes:)
I said that I was talking myself into a new PSU, think I've just confirmed it!?!?!?!

How does this PSU look to everone?
