Build my first PC yesterday and everything hasn't really gone to plan.

I can post pictures, my components error messages ect if needed.

So, if I try and install a 32 operating system of a CD (tried Ubuntu, Fedora and Dream), I get various errors. All differenet though.

I've managed to get a 64 dvd opensuse working... sort of. It boots up from hard drive. However, can't get internet or anything to work really. Might just be that distro I'm finding hard to use.

Or is it just worth me buying vista for £40 or getting someone to burn me a copy of Windows 7 RC?

7 rc first tbh, its free so why not? just go online somewhere to get yourself a serial for it from microsfot. i am using Windows 7 and i think it's a good OS. though you might need to do some work to get drivers and things for your hardware depending on what stuff you have got. the only real pain i had was the wifi adapter i was using but i found a fix so all is cool:D

could be a stick of mem not working properly...although it has worked sort of... worth trying memtest a couple of times to see if your mem is ok.

I think a lot of those Linux distros have a memory test function built in so might be worth doing.

I've had a few different Linuxes just simply not install on some hardware. Id say give W7 a go first just to see if it installs ok. If it doesnt then report back and the proper fault finding can begin!

What are the errors you get from ubuntu etc?

Have you tried running ubuntu as a live cd? and what are the specs of the pc?

Okay, just stuck Dream in and an running mem test now. I'll edit the post when it is done.

Status: Running Mem Test

About Windows 7, I've downloaded it but can't burn it to a DVD for some reason. I get unable to format disk and any time I try to burn it using InfraRecorder, it just pops the disk tray out almost as soon as I tell it to start.

These are my components, let me know if you want the links on OC.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M720-US3
Processor: AMD Athlon x2 Black Edition 64 2.8Ghz
Gfx card: Radeon HD 4650
Memory: OCZ Gold Edition 4GB DDR2 PC2-8500C5 Dual Channel
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache

Optical Drive: This is what I ordered: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-122-SA&tool=3

But I think I have the slower 20x version.

Dun know man for me it worked perfectly well
Is the directory correct of the file
Did you install it properly. Did it find the optical drive

I don't know. How can I tell? It just says DVD + RW

Anyway, it it got a Pass several times and has found 0 errors. About the Ubuntu error. It just does this about 20 times:

[numbers] Buffer I/O error in device fd0, logical block 0

I've now got the internet working on openSUSE, Still having problems with the other disks. Will get some more DVDs soon and try again.

Thanks for the help you've given me.

so you installed the os? If not than you can copy it to a usb pen drive (8GB) and set the bios to boot for the usb.........

Haven't yet. Do I set it to USB hard drive if I'm using a pen drive?

So, upload the iso onto the pen drive, change bios and boot?
