It seems there are a heap load of "help with my new build" threads and I've read through loads of them to get some ideas. However everyone has different requirements, and you bunch on here always seems up for giving a helping hand so here is my one...

I'm a photographer and need a machine primarily for photoshop, lightroom, other processing and storage. I will also be using it for tv, blue ray/dvd, maybe some video editing and of course internet and everyday emails etc. I don't play games and my budget is under £1000 (more like £850 would be nice so I can buy some software). I have never overclocked anything before, but I would like to do so since its free speed.

What I'm thinking so far is something like this (prices approx, I'm in a hurry!):

Processor: 2.66Ghz i7 £200

MB: Asus P6T SE £145 (This board seems to get good reviews and should be good for OCing. I don't see much point in getting the non SE version really?)

RAM: 6GB of something. Not sure what but I think 1600Mhz and about £75...suggestions?

Cooler: Titan TTC-NK85TZ Fenrir CPU Cooler £33

Hard drive 1: 500GB samsung spin point (I heard they were quiet) or WD black. £45

Hard drive 2: 1TB of the above £70

Case/PSU: Don't know yet, I want something nice/clean looking with at least 4 hard drive bays. Looking to spend £80-100 on case and PSU...suggestions? What power do I need? 500watts ok?

Optical drive: a blue ray drive. I heard panasonic ones are quiet. £50ish

TV tuner: I want a dual tuner, I think I saw one for £50 ish, not really looked into it too much.

Wireless card: £25.

Graphics card: I figured I don't need something super powerful and I'm leaning towards ATI as I have heard many people have problems with NVIDIA cards and lightroom. is a 3650 a bit crap at around £50? Do I need to get a better one? If so what?

Windows: 7 RC

I am getting a 24inch monitor too (Dell or HP, not decided yet) and will also need wireless keyboard/mouse but this is more personal preference so only really need the advice on the computer bits.

Sorry its a bit airy fairy, but at least everything is open to suggestions :D

Thanks.

Haven't included a tuner, as im not to up on whats decent what isnt.

would probably change the netgeat wireless card for the linksys one if they were in stock, same with the cooler over the fenrir.

optical drive wise maybe look at a separate blue ray player and dvd drive.

might be a valid point from shadow about an SSD drive, not sure how much better it would do with the apps you use tho, might be worth a look/post in the hard disk forum.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll stick with intel processor and more than likely the i7. I was also thinking of just getting a blue ray reader at the moment and then getting a DVD writer later when I really need it (I can use my laptop for writing disks for now). Did think about the SSD but read a few things about the cheaper ones not being very reliable? Tad expensive too.

Patriot Viper RAM seems to be popular, is this the top choice in that price range?
Hard drives...you've both specced spinpoints for one of the drives which has surprised me. I thought I would be told to get the WD caviar drives for reliability?

You have also both specced a cheap graphics card so can I assume that I don't really need to spend much on that at all?

I'll come up with a more accurate spec in a minute...

Ok gone through some stuff on here and have come up with this:

On top of this I will need a TV tuner (no idea which one will be good but I need a dual tuner and good signal pick up), a wireless card and a blue ray reader (the sony BDU-X10S is not currently in stock here).

Any comments or suggestions? Is that cooler any good? Seems to have reasonable reviews. I will want to overclock to something reasonable, nothing crazy, maybe 3.5-3.8.

That spec looks pretty good. For the extra £10, though, it's worth going for the Titan Fenrir CPU cooler if you're planning to overclock. These chips do get very hot indeed.
