Hi, so built my first computer yesterday, yay me. Specs:

  • I7 8700k CPU
  • 980ti GPU (fab eBay find)
  • Unbranded Dell memory (8GB DDR4 PC4-21300, 2666MHZ)open to thoughts if upgrade is needed
  • Asus Z390-A
  • EVGA 850 BQ, 80+ BRONZE 850W
  • Random Dell SSD & NVME
  • Be Quiet 500DX
So after some messing around I have it up and working but I cannot see how to connect the RGB cable from the case to the mobo. The mobo has 4pin connectors and where the cable for the RGB on the case is a 4 pin, it has one of the pin holes filled in so you can't push it into the 4 pins. Looked around the board carefully and can't see anywhere else to plug it in other than the obvious RGB 4 pin connectors.

Not life or death here but anyone who has come up against this, any help would be appreciated.

I believe that your motherboard only has 12V 4pin rgb headers whereas you need a 5V 3pin argb header.

If you really want to get the case LEDs hooked up to the board, you can shop around for a RGB to ARGB converter which can usually be found in the £15 to £30 range.

Edit: Example of what I described: https://youtu.be/yF4dsqJ_W0I

Nope I can see that won't work

Yes, unfortunately that's just a splitter whereas you need something that will convert your 4 pin MB header into a 3 pin output for your case LEDs as shown in the link that I edited into my first reply :)

Thank you dear sir, very helpful and appreciated

So new issues. The AI Optimized overclock feature stops Windows from loading. Do I need some extra juice running to the Mobo or maybe it's just trying to push the CPU too far and it just crashes...

Do you have the 8 pin connector beside the IO shield connected?

Yes, I didn't last night then realised around 1am that might be worth plugging in after it failed to fire. It's in now yes, thanks.

Sorry didn't explain that well. Last night it wouldn't boot at all, that was the issue. Today I've put the AI overclock on and it won't boot. Obviously I've switched it back to normal now but still... Wondering what the issue may be or if it's just auto overclock sucks and manual is the way to go. Or rather for me seeing as I know when and how to say overclock and nothing more, I should just leave it.
