Hey, my first build tommorrow and i just have one question.

I bought a belkin anti static wrist strap and was wondering the best place to attach the crocidile clip?
Some say attach to the case but unless pluged in its not grounded and i would not like to have the psu plugged in even if off when i am building.

The radiator is another place but my radiators are painted, i have unpainted water pipes but the crocidle clip wont fit onto them.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

When you get your case, fit the powersupply first to the case. When done, put the kettle (power lead) into the powersupply but DONT turn on the power on the powersupply. This will ground you to the case :D

No i dont have one of those, any other ideas please.
Do as Ben suggests you will be fine. You dont really need to use an anti static wrist strap.

As long as the PSU is in the case and is plugged in, but not switched on you will be grounded. That is how I have always done it.

If i plug my netbook into the wall socket and then touch the unpainted metal rim on the side or the power button would that ground me. (Netbook is Samsung nc10)

Also what about humidity, with it being winter and all.

touch an unpainted part of a radiator, or simply plug in the PSU (dont turn it on) and touch that. The PSU is designed to earth the case and will do the same for you very well.

TO be honest I think the static risk has been exaggerated.

Unless your building it ouside in the snow don't worry about humidity!!! If you are

a) your daft and hard as nails!

b) leave it 48 hours before switching on when you bring it inside

scratch a bit of paint of the radiator? no one will ever notice.
i think the risk of static has been exagerated to but some people like my wife have a way of harvesting static by walking around no matter what type of shoes shes wearing.

sometimes a touch from heris like beeing pinched by eletcricity

Damage to components from static electricity isn't as big an issue as some people like to make out, but it's better to be safe than sorry. When I built my computer I purchased a cheap (£3 approx) wrist band to ensure I wasn't statically charged- I did this for the aforementioned reason. You don't need one though, and you should be perfectly safe if you touch unpainted metal before starting to discharge yourself.

All depends on whether you tend to create static electricity on a day to day basis or not. Most people don't but some (as stated above) do and these are the ones that should be using anti static stuff.

I have to say that pretty much everyone I've worked with never bothers with the wrist straps, or proper grounding. But as its your new build its worth taking that extra step, I tend to just touch the case before starting work on a PC :)
