Hi guys, my computer crashed on me after a vista update and there seems to be no real fix for my problem, I was considering upgrading before this happened but now it seems like the best thing to do as the parts are kinda outdated now.

My computer specs are
Processor: Intelcore 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Motherboard: MCP73PV /NVIDA MCP73
RAM: 4GB of DDR2
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7100
PSU: Delta Electronics Inc - Output 250W
Hard Drive - 750gb

I think out of that, I'd only use the processor, Hard Drive and Ram and sell the rest away on ebay or something. I am willing to spend around £600 on new parts - Heres a list of what I'll need (feel free to add something Ive missed as new to this)

Motherboard - I really do want something with usb 3.0 as I transfer files around a lot. However I guess its not essential if its over my pricepoint.

Graphics Card - it will be playing back HD movies and playing PC games casually on a 42inch tv. (HDMI port and DVI port needed)

Fan - it will be on pretty much all day so will need a decent cooling.

Case - Anything that looks decent and works well with the parts youve chosen.

PSU- 800watts+ ? less if you can find parts low enough to run the above.

Thanks for any help I recieve

Not even a System Restore or full re-installation/format can sort it out?!?! I'm surprised because never heard of a (software) update to completely kill off a system, OK maybe a BIOS update gone wrong but even that there's a cheap & quick fix.

But maybe that PSU wasn't up-to-it. Is the machine powering up at all?

Anyway, if you keep your current processor you'll be stuck with Intel's Socket 775 which is now considered dead i.e. no upgrade path. But for £600, you can build a pretty decent & current system:

Assuming you'll keep the HD & optical drive. Sell off the rest to refund

Depending upon the stepping of the q6600 you could get almost £100 back for that alone.

With cases you would be better to look for one yourself as cases are very personal to everyone.

Hp7909 's suggestions are a solid choice that should fullfill all your needs.

Yeh it was strange, it gives me no screen input on 3 different screens/connections, No keyboard power, the mouse powers up but everything else is dead, no beeps. Fans and other things are still running. I have tried replacing certain things (well my brothers IT friend has) but it didnt change a thing, Time to move on...

hp7909 thanks for that, Not really good at finding parts but going take a stab at making one now and hopefully be corrected till I get it right, Yeh I may aswell sell the Q6600 then, I was planning to later if it was needed, I guess I can sell it on ebay as they are going for £90ish so add another £100 to the budget :)

Change the cpu to the i7 930, 20 quid cheaper and it's essentially the same but lower multiplier (doesn't matter if you overclock).

That mobo is just wrong.. it's a 1156 socket mobo with a h55 chipset for built in graphics, you need a 1366 socket mobo with that i7.

i'd keep the q6600 drop it into a p45 mobo, like the Asus P5Q Deluxe ocuk have, keep the 4gb of ddr2, corsair 650w psu spec'd above, 1gb version of the 460 gtx, antec 902 case and maybe the corsair h50 or the akasa viper cooler.
