First Build Woes

So, I've build my first ever PC:

i7 920,
Biostar Tpower x58
Akasa Nero Cooler
Zetec GTX 260
6GB Corsair 1333
2 x 1TB Samsung HD (not in raid)
Coolermaster Silent Pro 700W
Lian B25 Case

After a couple of 'moments', I've got it all running, Vista 64 installed etc.

Now although I'm not after a "serious" overclock, from reading around, I did expect to get 3.4-3.6 out of that set up.

But I've basically had no luck at all overclocking, so I've been running at stock. Worse, I just downloaded LinX to try a heavy 8 thread load and Vista BSOD'd on me. RealTemp gave temps of about 72C just before it died.

I suspect I don't have a good CPU: In the Bios it reports CPU Vcore: 1.264V, which I think is very high for a i920.

Even so, I don't see why it should BSOD on stock. Obviously as it's a first build I could have done stupid stuff with the heatsink, and it was getting pretty hot with the LinX. But 72C shouldn't cause a BSOD, I think.

Any help or suggestions gratefully recieved - I spent about 100 hours trying to decide on the best build, and I'm feeling pretty down/stupid right now.

Looks a tasty spec.
Well, that was the idea.

Idle temps are 32 32 34 32 right now.

Heatsink is Akasa Nero. I believe it's seated OK, but it's a push-pin job, so I'm not sure how you'd be 100% certain. Felt pretty solid at the time though.

i did my first build 2 days ago running nice still need to run prime 95. But accrodign to my Biostar cpu temp display it said 19c all iwas doign was internet browsing got a tuniq tower.

Not an expert on computers but you didnt apply loads of thermal paste onto the cpu i used about pea size and using clear bag rubbed it so you just couldn't quite see the writing?

You running an i7?

If you're getting 19c and I'm getting 32c that would indicate something wrong. But (although not an expert either), I'm not totally convinced about the 19c. Room temperature is normally more than that!

I used a small amount and clear bag, yes. Maybe I should take it off and have a look?

So, I removed the heatsink and reseated (also rotated by 90 degrees as I had a better idea of the overall airflow). The TIM seemed to have made a nice thin layer. Temps were a little better afterwards but not hugely.

I'm stuck...

TBH 32 aint bad (what setting you got fans on?), Run prime 95 and see what temps you get?

some people get 32c idle then like 50c on prime 95 which is good.

I wouldnt be worrying to much about getting 32c. Run prime 95 and if you CPU overheats then there could be airflow problems or something

Thing is, it gets hot, but not that hot. The people overclocking to 3.8Ghz+ are running in the 80's at load, and I'm getting reboots at < 65C. And to repeat, that is with everything at stock.

Added to which, even mild overclocks cause instant BSOD; other than mine, I don't think I'd ever heard of an I7 having trouble at 3.2Ghz.

The bios has a Memtest, and the CPU completes that fine at 3+Ghz. It then instantly fails (<5 seconds) if you try to go into Vista.

Added to probably the highest Vcore I think I've seen for an i7, I'm thinking it's just not a healthy chip. Not sure what to do next though.
