First build won't POST....

Evening all,

Just put together my first PC but can't get it to POST and go into the bios. It starts up, cpu cooler, case and graphics card fans all spin but that's about it, just sits there, no beeping or anything. My monitor power light just flashes as though there is nothing connected to it. I've tried various things after searching these forums and googling the problem but to no avail:

  • motherboard battery taken out and cmos jumper moved to clear cmos.
  • dvd drive and hard drive disconnected to get back to bare minimum needed for starting up
  • Changed the PCI slot the graphics card is plugged into
  • Tried 1 and 2 sticks of RAM to see if one was duff

All of the above had no effect, PC just switched on but wouldn't POST. The only time I had anything different was when I had no RAM at all and then I got one long and 2 short beeps as per the motherboard manual.

Anyone got any ideas as to what I can try next?

Is it my graphics card that's not working? I haven't got any spare cards \ compatible systems that I can test things with unfortunately

Any help greatly appreciated, spec as follows

Leadtek GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
'Wolfdale' 8200 2.66GHz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Corsair TX 650W
Samsung SATA DVD
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB SATA-II
Asus P5K Intel P35
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5

Cheers for reading

Have you tried each stick of RAM in every slot on the board?

There's probably a couple of combinations I've not managed yet, what with all the swapping round I've done. I'll try every combination in the morning.

have you connected your CPU to the power supply on the motherboard? This is a fairly common mistake.

Yep, 24 pin EATXPWR and 4 pin ATX12V both plugged (is that what you meant...?) to the motherboard

ok i just read what you put and i can tell you now that i know how you feel. I have the same kind of rig and had the same problem. No post unless it had no memory in it. That board needs its bios updating to support the wolfdales. Im afraid that you need a spare 775 cpu to do this.

Will I be able to update the bios using the rom file from the asus website by putting it onto a USB stick? Or do I have to be getting to the POST beeps to be able to do this?
