Hello

Im looking to build a new PC myself, and have, well....erm...a tightish budget . What I do definatly want is a Q6600, and 4GB RAM. I already have a HD, GPU, and screen I will be salvaging from my old PC. I am undecided on a Case/PSU/Motherboard/RAM. Can anyone suggest some components and tips? My budget is £400. I will also not be OCing.

Thanks!

What is the HD and GPU that you will be using from your old PC?

Here is a quick spec I did just to give you an idea of what you can get.

Without knowing which GPU you will be using I can't say for sure if that PSU will be powerful enough.

GPU is a ATI Radeon HD3870 512MB on PCI-E I think. Ive already got that PSU in my current PC, but something keeps throwing random restarts so I think I would still need another PSU.

Thanks for the reply to ANDARIAL.

Try and test the PSU out and see if it is the cause or not. If it's faulty just RMA it and get a new one, it'll save you £50. :)

What do you mean by test it out? Check for current running through the leads? Oh and are you sure that PSU will sufficently power everything without any hickups?
And once again thanks for your help everyone!

Check to make sure the voltages are stable in the BIOS.
If you can, try it in another PC. If you don't have another PC to try it in you could order the CPU, motherboard, RAM and case and see if it works OK with the new build..

The Corsair 450W will easily power that rig.

Right, now thats sorted is there anything else I would need? Thermal compound/CPU Cooler? Also, is it worth trying to use my old HD with an OS on with the new MB or is it best to just format it (how?) and do a clean install?

That cpu specified above will come with TIM (heat transfer compound pre applied)to the supplied HS,
ok for standard use,if you intend to overclock you will/may need a better one in the future
as for hdd best back up all your photos, music etc then format the hdd with a fresh install of operating system of your choice
after you have the hardware all installed insert the windows cd/dvd then follow the prompts for a clean install :)

So I just fit all the components to the MB, plug everything in and fire it up, then insert Windows CD and install that, then any drivers that came with the components. Is that about it? Oh and how do I format my HD? Does it give you the option upon an install of windows or do I have to do it manually?

Basically yes
Build pc
Start
Enter bios,set boot from cd/dvd
press F10 reboot
Follow on screen commands for clean install it will then ask you if you want a quick install or which drive you want to install to

Assuming you only put 1 hdd in and that you dont want anything off it(you remembered to backup everything you wanted right? :) )
I take it you only want 1 partition?so just select the hdd from the list(if only 1 hdd that will be all you see)
Choose format with ntfs

any other questions just ask

Right, now everythings sorted and (Hopefully), the orders placed tomorrow, I'd just like to take the oppertunity to thank everyone here that has helped me to do this 1st build and your all great! :p

Merry Xmas everyone :)
