Hi All,

I've been planning on a build for quite a long time now, and now I finally have the opportunity to actually go ahead with it!

I'm currently using a nearly three year old Dell laptop so anything is going to be an upgrade really.

It will be mainly for general use as well as regular gaming/programming/rendering.

I have a budget of somewhere around £1500 but I've only sort of got a rough idea of a spec, and I'm not really sure what I can get for my money.

So my basic spec so far is:

Intel I7 920

Gigabyte UD3R or ASUS P6X58D-E (I've heard very good things about the ASUS)

6GB Patriot Viper 12800C8

Samsung F3 1TB

Antec 902

Sony Optiarc DRU-870S

Dell U2410 (upgrading from a Dell 2209WA)

Windows 7 Home Premium

Graphics - UNDECIDED

Power Supply - UNDECIDED

Keyboard and Mouse - UNDECIDED (currently own an Apple wired keyboard and Logitech G5, looking to upgrade)

Other parts I think I need:

Wireless Card - No Idea

Headphones with mic

Hoping I've not forgotten anything. :p

Just a few quick questions on those components:

Is it definitely worth getting one of the SATA6 motherboards as I've noticed the UD5 is much cheaper in the SATA3 model?

I do plan to overclock a little, is it worth upgrading from the stock cooler on the 920?

I did look at the ATI 5770 and the higher end ATI cards though I've heard that the 58xx cards are quite long and heavy and even damage some motherboards PCI-E slots, is there any truth in this?

Power Supply - Is it worth going for modular for the extra tidiness?

I'll stop there for now. :p

Thanks :)

Thanks for your replies. :)

I hadn't really considered an AMD build before, but probably would now, that's a nice looking spec there.

Thanks for your input guys. :)

I've changed my spec around a little bit, and decided on i7 for my build.

Here is my spec:

ASUS P6T Deluxe Palm Edition
Intel i7 920
Patriot Viper 6GB C8
Samsung F3 1TB
Sony Optiarc
Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro Rev 2
Antec 902
Corsair HX650W
Windows 7 Home Premium
Edimax Wireless Card

The only component I am missing is a graphics card, I will decide on one later.

Just checking to see if this spec looks OK, any changes you would recommend if I were to want to overclock?
