Hi all.

The time has come to buy my first car, so i'm up for suggestions.

Not really keen on Corsa/Saxo etc.

Was thinking along the lines of a late Escort, Xsara, Almera and so on. Probably 1.4ish due to insurance..

Got a 1k budget for the car.

Any recommendations?

Cheers.

fiesta?

thousands about and lots of different shapes so lots to choose from.

my advise is buy a oldish car first off as you will get a few scrapes an dings.
i had 3 fiestas then 3 corsas then another fiesta then a vectra then a corsa an now a alfa romeo .....go figure :p

Probably about another 1k on top? Or would that not be enough for that type of car?

Obviously i'm not expecting to be driving anything amazing, but I would like a few basic features. :)

Can you get insurance for a first timer these days for 1k?

Mine was £700 TPO and that was 12 years ago.

First 3 years insurance is hell no other way of putting it.

I quite like the Xsara in Blue :) Nice looking cars and fairly kitted compared to an older Peugeot 306 model for the same price.

IIRC they're nearly the same car anyway.

Done a few online quotes on 15 year old 1.4 Fiestas/Escorts etc TPFT and i'm getting prices of £2500+.

No wonder theres so many people driving with no insurance!

Despite the adverts, I've found Sheila's Wheels are pretty damn cheap.

In that case you need to try more insurance companies - the ones you've tried so far do not really want to insure someone with your details - hence the high price.

Try the Admiral group (admiral, elephant, bell, diamond) and add an older female driver as a 2nd driver.

Who's that with? (the lowest) The lowest I seem to find is 1700!
An insurance company that's cheap for one person might not be cheap for someone else.

The only way to find out if you've got the lowest insurance quote is to get a quote from every company. And it's best to go to each insurer individually rather than using a "we check eleventy billion insurers to find you the best quote" system.

I'd go for and did go for a Peouget 305 DT and although a 1.9 turbo its not that fat and is only IG5. How old are you?

Try confused.com for a rough idea on insurance, i got quoted £450 next year for my 306, 21 yo, 1 years driving, 0 ncb, no crashes, ect..... not bad I thought.

This is a pic of my car, cost me £1500 a year ago but you could get one for £1000 easy tbh. Mine was P reg, 92K, FSH.....

Ain't they just for women

Some of them you have to add a women as a seconed driver, although I think they have been told my the gov recently that they are breaking the law only insuring female drivers.

I tried Confused.com after I'd just got my insurance.

It told me that the cheapest was £1600, and that Admiral and Elephant wouldn't insure me - despite moving from Admiral to Elephant, and both quoting less than £750 for the exact same cover.
