So the time has come to ditch the busses and trains and step into the world of motoring.

I've got around £2,000 to spend on a car, and I've been looking around and I've been leaning towards getting a Peugeot 206.

Now I'm going to hold my hands up and admit that I virtually know nothing about cars, what's good, what's bad, what's going to cost me a fortune in petrol, repairs etc, so I thought I'd ask you guys for some advice.

I'll mainly be using it for commuting to work and back, with occasional driving at the weekends etc.

Will a 206 be ok for that, or would something else be recommended?

Thanks in advance

They're pretty terrible cars tbh. The likes of a fiesta, Yaris or even or Clio would be a better car for £2k if you're after something quite small

What makes them so terrible exactly?

First check how much your insurance will cost you.

I've had quotes on a range of cars, they all fall in the £1.3k-1.7k mark, with the 206s generally hitting £1.5k.

how far is it to work and what sort of driving does it contain ? A roads? Stop-start traffic? motorways?

About 10 miles each way. Mainly A roads with a short stint on the motorway. Could be a bit of stop-start nearer home.

There's a few things tbh

Firstly they have a shocking driving position, probably the worst I've ever experienced. Pedals are massively offset from the drivers seat so you're at a constant and uncomfortable angle. There isn't enough adjustment around the general driving position either so unless you happen to exactly fit the size they seemed to be aiming for you'll be forever uncomfortable.

They're also tiny inside ( even for the size of car) and have really horrible, shiney black plastic.

They're really quite unreliable in the worst possible way I.e electrical troubles. Simple mechanical failures are a fact of life and so long as parts are cheap pretty easy to dealwith, but electrical problems are almost never cheap to resolve and can take many hours to actually track down.

Honestly, save yourself the trouble and buy something else. I'm really not a French car fan but the equivalent Clio is fine really - other than an odd driving position (sit on the pedals) theyre decent to chuck around. Others like the Fiesta are much better to drive and more comfortable.

Ultimately it's up to you, but IMO its probably the worst small car available for your cash

Mk1 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec? Should be ok insurance wise and they always seem to get good reviews.
Otherwise VW Polo/Seat Ibiza/Skoda Fabia which are all pretty much the same car.

Thanks for taking the time to post this, this is why I came here first haha.

Like I said I don't know much about cars and was purely going on looks :(

That looks alright, how are vauxhalls?

What about corsas? Insurance is dirt cheap on them, but everyone has them. I guess that could be for a reason though.

The corsa is also pretty terrible to drive. The little 1 litre seems to suffer from recurring head gasket issues for some reason and the power steering is...odd.

But, there are an abundance of them around and they are dirt cheap to fix. Not a car I'd ever recommend buying but much better than the pug

My sister has a small 1.3 diesel Corsa, it's not a nice car by any means but for the 2.5k it cost her it's doing well.

They are also incredibly easy to get fixed as young lads crash them all the time so there is no shortage of parts.

Bare in mind that normally means the insurance costs more.

I'd second the focus option.

Go for a 1.6 5 door in Zetec Trim with the Climate Pack.

Will look good, be easy to sell on, and has all the bits that made the Focus a really usable car (Climate pack is Air Con, Heated Front screen, and I believe heated wing mirrors and washer jets).

They are brilliantly reliable, will see 150k+ miles no problem at all, and parts are super cheap. Only think to be mindful of is Cambelt and water pump change. Do it at 100k/10 years, whichever is sooner.

Corsa is actually the cheapest quote I've got @ 1.1k

Your insurance quotes seem mad as you're over 25 and presume have no other accidents (even with 0 years). Anyone else you can put on car as a named driver?
