First car insurance question

When my step-son got black box insurance a couple of years ago, it scheduled an appointment for fitting (as it was essentially a self contained GPS box with a simcard that just needed a 12v feed), but until it was fitted you were still covered without the blackbox (so my step-son had a couple of weeks where he could drive, get used to the car etc with a bit less worry)
That makes sense, thank you.

I'll check out Tesco, I don't think he got a quote with them yet.

It's only a 60hp Polo (not bought yet hence the question)he's insuring but quotes with a black box are coming in at around £3k.

Has he been driving your car as a learner without incident? If so, maybe your insurer could give him some NCD. This worked for me, but that was 40 years ago.

So I bought the Polo, was a really good buy (touch wood). Went to insure it and the black box price jumped up an extra £1500 to £4500 to insure it same day. Insuring it a few days later drops the insurance to £3000 on average so I guess they bump it way up to cover the period you don't have the box fitted. I've insured it temporarily for now in my name for £50 til the black box policy kicks in later this week.

Edit/ although thinking about it how do they know I'm not buying it at the end of the week so will drive it without the box. Urgh, I've gone cross-eyed. Nevermind, least it's sorted.

23 days (? fairly certain) is the optimum time to insure. If you can leave it on the drive for a few weeks it could certainly save £'00s if not more.

Overthinking it - nothing to do with when the black box is fitted, just a case of them charging more because they know you need insurance there and then.

He passed his test a couple of weeks ago, it doesn't seem to make much difference with me as a named driver.

It's only a 60hp Polo (not bought yet hence the question)he's insuring but quotes with a black box are coming in at around £3k. He's getting similar quotes for other cars too like Hyundai i10's, Fiesta's, Clio's, etc although the Fiesta is quite a bit higher.

Apparently there's a lot of young drivers crashing in my area, which is bumping it up, a few companies flat out refused to insure him.

Unfortunatley 3k seems pretty average for first car tbh, just the way things have gone.

Put yourself as main driver with him named, make sure that you use an insurer that will mirror ncd.
Next year get him his.own, but do make sure to use the vehicle for the shop runs and stuff so you can justify if otherwise you could be accused of fronting.

Black box policies should just be put in the bin tbh, all it takes is for it to go wrong, flag up they don't like his driving and auto cancel a policy. You'll then have to answer yes to the have you had insurance cancelled questions each renewal for.i think 5 years.

Have a look at a mazds 2/3 certainly up here they seem to be cheaper to uninsured than the other marquees equivalent edit nvm too late to the party haha

Yeah I was gonna say legally in a very grey zone there with this one

Flat out fronting and never using the car yes fully agree, I did however say to make sure they can justify being named driver

We have 4 cars in our household. One insured for our daughter as the main driver, one for the wife and one myself with the fourth only insured for myself.

I honestly couldn't tell you bar my daughters car (she is only insured on hers) who does the most mileage in each car. We all have sperate policies for the sake of no claims discount for each of us but we will grab the keys for whichever car based on which one is parked in the best place or convenience.

We do try and put some logic into who is the main driver on each car but in reality it is all a guess.
