First Conroe Overclocking Attempt

Hey guys,

On Wednesday I ordered a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 motherboard, an Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86GHz) processor, and 2GB GeIL DDR2-800 memory in the hopes of overclocking one of these sweethearts to 3GHz or more. My first test was a quick 2.8GHz overclock and it went fine, so today I decided to go for gold and hit that 3GHz mark. :)

Clock: 3010MHz (430*7)
Multi: 2.0 (860MHz RAM)
Timings: 4-4-4-12
VCORE: 1.525v
VDIMM: +0.3v
VFSB: +0.1v

Hopefully that looks okay to you guys, I know the voltage on the memory is a tiny bit low but I am aiming to experiment with trying to get 3Ghz on the lowest possible voltages. I could probably do with dropping my VCORE a bit actually and seeing how it runs, but I will get around to that later.

This processor is currently running at 3GHz with an idle temperature of 36ºc and a load temperature of 48ºc according to speedfan using a Scythe Ninja Plus cooler without the optional fan attached, and Arctic Silver 5 for soaking. It's 2x SP2004 stable for one hour so far, I haven't had the time to test it for any longer than that yet but I am hoping it's at least 3-5hrs stable at a minimum.

You can find my CPU-Z validation here if any of you are interested in knowing more.

By the way, I also have a quick question: -

Is my GeIL PC6400 DDR2-800 memory supposed to be read as PC5300 DDR2-666 by CPU-Z? I noticed that Gibbo recently benched with this memory to see how far it could overclock and that CPU-Z reported the exact same figures for him too.

Have fun overclocking those Conroes guys, these things are amazing.

Sincerely yours,
Úlfhednar.

Apparently the Geil memory shows a slower speed due to the voltage, or bios version of the mobo. I've read a coupla threads saying the same thing, Gibbo has also mentioned the same thing to. I've got the exact same setup as you (still wating for the E6300 to arrive though) so I'm expecting the same readings as you. :)

Ah, that's put my mind at ease then. :) I assumed it was simply a problem with CPU-Z, but I was worried that I might have faulty or mis-packaged RAM.

When you say that you're getting the same setup as I have, does that mean you'll be cooling with a Scythe Ninja too? If so then I should offer a quick word of warning: I am seeing a lot of people saying that they have had to re-seat their Scythe Ninja, and it was no different for me. The first time I put mine on with AS5 my CPU temps at 2.8GHz were hitting 72ºc under load, I re-applied the AS5 and slightly twisted the cooler around a few degrees in each direction on top of the CPU and it dropped temps to 48ºc.

Ulfhednar, what have you upgraded from ?

I'm tempted to drive down to ocuk now and collect some new stuff :p

What temps are you getting? core temp reports ~64c on mine under load and I'm only using 1.35v, saying that, I'm not sure I trust core temp.

I would have thought Vcore would be ok at default for 3Gs? I managed 3.6 at 1.40 volts. seems a bit high m8 and it will generate a lot of heat which will kill your OC

Whats you MCH set at ?

My old spec was as follows: -

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-K8NE (Socket 754 & PCI-E)
  • Processor: AMD Athlon64 Newcastle 3400+ (@ 3800+ Speeds)
  • CPU Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro
  • Memory: 2048MB Corsair Value DDR400
The upgrade only costed me £160 as I sold all the above gear, and some extra stuff, to my brother for £250. :D

38ºc idle and 48ºc under load, cooling includes a Scythe Ninja for the CPU, an 80mm intake (side window) and two 80mm exhausts (rear.) I don't have the optional fan attached to my Ninja, as it contacts with my intake and makes it a bugger to remove and replace the whole panel.

Aye, I am working on trying to get it stable with all my voltages as low as possible. It's stable at 1.525v and the temps are perfectly fine as above, so I'll let you know if temps drop nicely when I turn the juice down.

I can't remember what the MCH is set at, so I will go into the BIOS later and let you know as I have some stuff downloading at the moment and don't want to interrupt it.

The MCH is the key to High FSB's. This is more important than Vcore. I suspect its this thats holding you back m8
I'll keep that in mind. I'm not really held back at the moment as 3.0GHz was my goal, but when I decide to start seeing what the limit is I will definitely follow your advice. :)

P.S. What voltages do you have your RAM running on? I noticed in a thread you had the memory at 3-7-7-21 or something and I'd like to see if I could get mine running stable at those timings. Are those timings faster than 4-4-4-12?

its was 0.1 over
Thanks for letting us know, am I right in assuming that those timings of yours are quicker than 4-4-4-12? This is my first time bothering adjusting memory timings as I have only used cheap value stuff before this set.

Sorry I edited my last post while you were replying.
