Saw this over at RPS.

For those who are wondering whether it’s just fan art, like the splendid Bioshock 2 ones, it comes along with a quote from Eidos Montreal’s David Anfossi, where he says - “These pictures help our artists with visualizing the spirit we want to realise in Deus Ex 3. We called upon the original concept artists for the preceding games in order to determine the direction which we took”.

I doubt it will be as good as the original too, but has any game released since really come close? Deus Ex remains one of my favourite PC games of all time and it's a shame that no PC game made since has built on what made it a great success.

If they're willing to pay enough service to the original game as to get the ol concept artists in, that's something positive at least. :)

I wonder where they'll go with the story in it. Part of the problem with DX2, as well as the gameplay problems, is that it didn't feel like they really knew where they were going after the first game. They wrote three very seperate endings to it, and all of them were too conclusive to really extend on properly.

It won't be as good as the first, but it could be a lot better than the second.

Invisible War was pretty good seeing as it came out on Xbox as well, but with the new influx of 360 ports and crappy games that appeal to casual gamers who want to mindlessly hammer one button, this one has it's doubts. I remember playing the original ages ago on my mates brother's PC, and I was amazed that I could smack up an ill tramp with a crowbar. a lot of PC games don't do that for me anymore, (I don't mean the crowbar beatings) the wow factor of 'you can't do this on consoles' or 'there's no game like this with such an open story on consoles.' Now it is just 'yeh this is a crappy port, it actually plays better on consoles.'

IW was the massive let down purely because it was coded and scripted for consoles from every single design aspect into the shallow, watered down atrocity that it was.

In my eyes it wasn’t ‘pretty good considering it game out on the xbox’ it was appalling purely because it was made for the console gamers and then ported. What you’re worried about is exactly what killed the innovation and depth for the second game and is exactly what I’m sure the majority of us are worried about for this third instalment too. Considering the awful sales climate of pc games (A very large percentage of PC gamers will willingly pirate rather than purchase a single player heavy game such as this) we really shouldn’t even begin to get our hopes up that this won’t be yet another console build that is then ported to the pc.

Better than the second? Hopefully. Deserving of the franchise the first strived to create? Extremely unlikely in my eyes and I refuse to listen to any different because I don’t want to get my hopes up; otherwise I may just go on a Gunther style killing spree if they do it again.

Meh, I've never played a Deus Ex (shocking I know), but lets hope its almost as good as the fabled original everyone is going on about.

agreed second was a let down

Sorry what I meant, it was pretty good for a game on Xbox, I never played it on PC. Thing is, I never properly played through the original Deus Ex, so I don't know how good it was, I just thought that IW was on par with what I had seen from the previous game, sorry but I am quite young so consider that I played these games when I didn't know any better. I only realised about the atrocious PC ports when I switched to PC gaming last year and saw Rainbow Six which really opened my eyes to it, after playing that on 360 before and liking it I realised how arkward it felt on PC. I don't know how bad IW was compared to the original as I what I played of it was played when I was very young and didn't quite understand it all :).

You’ve got me worried that my reply sounded confrontational with all those apologies in your post!! Honestly not intended if that’s how it seemed; I’m just livid and still (yes honestly even after 4 years) a little sore from the poor excuse of a sequel that IW was.

I’m a fairly apathetic forum user but I can’t help myself in Deus Ex threads. It’s probably best to mention right now that I enjoyed invisible war! During the periods that I was able to forget its heritage I thought it was a very good game!

I could start listing all the simplifications and diluted game play elements that were made in the sequel to appease console playability but we’d be here all day. In short, imagine a sequel to a great game that takes it in the right direction, expands on game play elements that were on the fringe but well received and add depth, believability, and replay-ability, everyone would be very happy, but that’s the exact opposite of what happened. The risky design elements in the original simply couldn’t be included never lone expanded on for console play, the depth was stunted to allow for the casual gamer to colour between the lines, the complex hud, skill and inventory system were thrown out the window because a controller simply couldn’t navigate through them and instead of expanding on permanent choices that the original touched on; they repeated their mistake and you can literally experience every ending just by doing something different on the final map.

Honestly, if it weren’t for the storylines and graphics if you played IW and then the original afterwards, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the original was the sequel because it has a much richer game play experience.

Deus Ex was the first truly groundbreaking merger between RPG and FPS elements and one of the first action games that flirted with the idea of true non-linear game play. Don’t get me wrong it was still definitely on rails with regards to storyline but other than making it a sandbox; it’s difficult to deviate too much from the core storyline without a lot of funding and man hours to script and code the variations. But there are still whole webs of decisions with storyline consequences that you make without even realising until the outcome allows a moment of clarity. It’s also one of the earliest shooter games that properly allowed multiple playing styles and approaches and it was a very mature and well thought out game. Game engine glitches and hardware incompatibility issues due to that side of the QA really let down initial sales and reviews. It also has a slightly abrasive undertone and deep rooting in a large number of conspiracy theories and this turns a lot of people off it if they read too much in to what they were trying to achieve with those sideline elements.

People will accuse me of retroactively superimposing a game play experience that was never there and perhaps I do have an inflated opinion on just how groundbreaking it was in its time. But no game has immersed me or excited me anywhere near as much as it did since. If the third instalment manages to grasp hold of some of the richer game play elements that are still yet to be properly emulated in any other game that I’ve played since, then it will be a game of the year contender in my eyes.

No problem, you weren't rude or anything, you obviously have a strong opinion on it whereas I've only had limited play with the original. Looking back I gave an opinion on it when really, I had only jumped in on IW, and after reading your post I realised that the original was much better, so I really wasn't in a position to comment on how we don't want it to be another crappy console port. I just wanted to point out I had not played the original all the way through on PC, so didn't know that IW was not as good as it should have been. I probably enjoyed IW a lot more than you as I played it when I was at the age I could understand the story and play through it but not notice the technical limitations and watered down gameplay on a console, especially as all I had to compare it to was brief play on the original at a very young age. Just so you know I've just turned 16 so must have been around 8 when I played the original at my mates house on his brother's PC while he was out :).

Was it actually well received on the consoles? As in was it a success or a complete flop like it was on the pc? As i would hope it was a total flop on the consoles as well, and so the third game will go back to the first one and make it a decent game

heh if u want to truely see what consoles have done to the rainbow 6 franchise go and play the original r6 or rogue spear... those were truely legendary games, raven shield (the third game although not to be compared to r6:3 on the consoles) was equally awesome but a bit more user friendly with the new engine... and then there is lockdown and vegas... a bunch of kiddy games that are a fps with the clancy/r6 name tacked on the top

Only thing comforting me right now is that the developers admit the second wasn't as good as they had hoped, but only realized this too late into development. Hopefully they will have learnt from their mistakes

I know what they have done to RB6 games. I used to love Vegas on 360 (I knew it wasn't anything like the originals all along) but I got so bored of the game (not to be big headed here) as I was so good online, me and my mates in a 10 man room 4 vs 6 on Calypso Casino would run around with sniper rifles in CQC and USPs, dressed in mutli coloured armour and still clean up the whole level, often by ourselves as we ****** about at first then 2 or 3 got killed by each other then the last ones would clean up. Looking back I realise how ridiculous that was, it was fun but was in no way like RB6, we didn't even have to fight tactically, we just danced around ******* about shooting each other at the beginning of matches because we knew we would win. After that I sold my 360 games and got a decent PC and here I am, complaining about how consoles are ruining PC games :D.
