What would you guys recommend for a first all round digital SLR? Im looking for something I can easily use to take a few snapshots with and then upload them at home. Nothing too complicated.

My budget would probably be around £350 - £400.

Any help would be appreciated!

Of which a digital SLR is not. Have you considered an SLR style compact within your budget? Something like the Canon S2 IS or the Fuji S5600 sounds more like what you should be looking for.

A digital SLR is not a pick up and go piece of equipment, its for people seriously into the hobby of photography and like to buy various pieces of equipment for the situation they are in. Quality wise yes they are better, but the complexity and expense of using them is also substantially greater.

I don't want to sound like I jump on this wagon everytime someone asks for a camera recommending, but from the way many of the thread starters begin their threads an actual DSLR is overkill for their needs...way way overkill.

I agree with TomWiko, the description of what you want to do matches smaller cheaper but very competent cameras better than an SLR.

Agreed with the above two comments.

Then you don't want a digital SLR, as it fulfils none of these requirements.

Dunno about yours, but mine is perfectly capable of being used to quickly take a few snaps and then upload like any other camera. Only thing that slows me down is USB1.1 :p

An image from a D-SLR requires a lot processing to match an image straight out of a point out shoot camera.

So, a D-SLR is not as quick as you think :)

That's the point I was trying to make. Bloody Nikon fanboys  ;)

Thanks for the help, how different is a digital SLR on the body compared to a 35mm film SLR? I use my 35mm quite a bit. Could I transfer some of my knowledge across or is it a whole new ball game?

the majority of your know-how would still be applicable!
If you can't be fussed with post-processing on a PC, then shots can be made to have "punch" straight out of the camera by twiddling settings.
For the best results of course you need to manually post process... But if you don't fancy that, then fair enough.

Not especially, set it up in the menu to shoot with increased saturation and sharpness, and its almost the same.

It's not like you have to shoot RAW etc.

Nikon D50
Canon 350D

i too, am totally unsure what to do, and have these two, plus the canon S3 IS...

ive preordered the S3 IS (New, due may), however after a another weekend at Brands hatch im starting to think that "digital compacts" are just too slow for what i need, so im now looking at the two SLR's above...

these would probably use my needs for fast moving objects, but im not so sure about loosing the option of movies on SLR's.

Both of those options have a 18-55 lense (the kits), although with the Nikon D50 being a lot cheaper, i can get the even bigger lense and only just be more expensive than the Canon 350D... Choices Choices..... :(

what sort of zoom range is 18-55? I dunno how that works

Im glad ive seen this topic because i want an SLR camera, but im not sure what sort i want.

Normal digital camera's ive had are rubbish, and as im going to le mans this year, i want something that will take very good pictures of all the cars on the move, of which a normal digital camera wouldnt be good enough.

I want something about £350ish too :) Just an entry level SLR camera.

/edit

Canon EOS 350D looks good, might be tempted in a month or so.

Certainly in the case of the Canons, they aren't hugely different. obviously there are more buttons on a digital, because you've got more things to play with, but certainly my 1N film beastie is very similar to my 20D digital toy - I just have to remember how much film costs when using the 1N :D

But if you've already got a film SLR, then provided it is something you can get a digital version of, then that should pretty much make the choice for you - I love my Canons, but if you've already got plenty of Nikon kit, then swapping systems is expensive, and probably pointless!
