Hi Guys,

I know you get these questions time and time again but I need your advise. My birthday is coming up and my girlfriend has said she'll buy me a camera. What I need to do now is find one. I don't mind second hand and have been looking at stuff like the 350d 1100d and d60 (all in the mm :P) and have been through reviews online but it would help to have some real feedback from people, not websites.
Am I looking at the right kinda stuff? What would you suggest otherwise? I want to keep the budget low but we don't want something thats going to need updating too often (do cameras need it? I'd have thought it would only need newer lenses...?)

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

DM

In the short time I've owned my camera and really got into this photography lark, it seems that lenses will outlast the camera if they're decent. You can obviously get different types for different tasks but they'll generally outlast the camera in terms of usefulness/quality.

As far as Canon cameras go - any of the xxxD cameras would be good and the higher numbers are newer with the 650d being the latest (no idea about Nikons but wiki is good for that! :)

Just need to decide on your budget and see what you can get for it I guess

I realise it's not as easy with used kit, but see if you can find a local camera shop where you can try some kit. It's a very personal choice, I just didn't get on with the ergonomics of the lower end Canons so I went Nikon.

I used to have a D60, decent little camera. The only issue is it's not fully compatible with some of Nikon's older lenses. It it's also not great in low light situations (but then most used cameras that age will be the same by modern standards.)

Nikon 3100 at Harrison Cameras is £305.00 , then add a Lens of choice.

Should be able to walk into jesopsnd pick up a D3100 + 18-55vr for 360 quid. Much better value or money tan many of the 2nd hand deals.

I'm a big fan of 2nd hand camera gear, but sometimes the price difference is just too small to loose the warranty and piece of mind. 2nd hand entry level camera seem to plateau at a value that is just too close to new prices. The d3100 is a nice camera, better sensor than some of the older models like d60 you listed.

Or find a second hand Nikon 3100? :E Might get yourself a few extras lumped in like the Memory card and a case or something. Little extras that never get mentioned which bump the price up :\
