Hi all

Am looking to build a new gaming rig with a budget of around £1000 for the tower. Also have £500 set aside for OS, Monitor, Gaming Keyboard and mouse, Headset etc.

The only thing I am hellbent on having is the: Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card, if my budget doesn't accommodate for this, I probably would consider swapping my wife for it. (would work out a lot cheaper too (in the long run)).

Many thanks in advance :)

Really nice build there.

I guess you could always drop the i7 down to an i5 and not opt for the aftermarket cooler if you wanted to get it under budget.

I would go for Doomedspeed's build - can't really top it! Could get a cheaper screen to get it to £1500 but those Benq's are lovely

Yeah I believe that a cheaper monitor could do nicely, and you'd probably want a personal choice of keyboard/mouse?

Thanks for the rapid replies, was not expecting it.

Is the i7 over the i5 the way to go?

Can go slightly over budget so no problem with this build, looks brilliant. Ill probably do a bit more research on keyboard and mouse before I buy to see what suits the games I play. Play BF 4 and the like on console, this rig will be purely for mmo's.

Also, may nee a wireless lan of some description as plugging it straight in may not be possible.

Thanks again.

Yeah, at this budget i7 is the way to go - yes, the i5 provides excellent performance for your money, but I believe that newer games are going to start using more than single/dual threads, so the i7 will come into play

Sold, i7 it is then!

I know computers cant be future-proofed, but how long should a build like this be valid before any upgrading will be required, probably a bit of a silly question, but a rough idea would be awesome :)

Cheers

I'd suggest it would be at least 3 years before you'd even think about needing to upgrade, and probably 5-6 before you'd get to a point where it became necessary. With PC tech it's kinda subjective though. Going Crossfire on the graphics and adding more memory (when it's much cheaper for both) would probably prolong it even more.

Doom's spec is epic, if you do need to save a bit you can get the trail version of windows 8.1 which lasts 90days then upgrade to the full version then.

The machine should last you easily for a good amount of time. The only real thing you would need to upgrade is the GPU in a few years, people with the i7 2600k are still solid today, don't see any huge difference for a few years that would effect gaming.

Thanks for all the info guys. Going to go with this spec bar the mouse and keyboard, and going with the up to date monitor too.

Will prob start build within the next couple weeks depending on work and delivery. Can't wait!!!

Thanks for the info and to doom for the spec, ill let you know how it goes! :)

For mice I don't think I can recommend one of these enough

I'm using the older (non-s) version, and it is absolutely fantastic. Especially love the dual-mode scrolling, using the high speed (smooth) for browsing and the other, more resistant mode for gaming :)

As for keyboards I'm quite happy my Razer Lycosa (EOL), but these days I'd say there's no reason to not go for a mechanical keyboard if you have the money for one, the K65 seems to be pretty popular as a 'budget' option
YOUR BASKET
1 x Corsair Vengeance K65 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Silver - Red Switch (CH-9000040-UK) £69.95
Total : £79.55 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Well keyboard I will probably go with the one on the spec, but the mouse, I want one of the ones with a few buttons on for macros and things, possibly a display.

I have been a "clicker" when gaming and want to break the habit and start using keybinds for functions, and use the mouse for movement. Going to be tough though, as its hard to break 15 year habits!!

+10 internets to OC by the way, either im a internet **** or they do the best deals on a lot of the hardware going. Couldn't find most of it any cheaper anywhere, especially the GPU, was less by far. Is there a reason for this?

Please don't hate me for looking though, we all like a deal. Well tight people like me do anyway. :)
