First Ever Overclock - Finally doing it! E7200

Hello

I have just brought a new HSF and thermal paste

I have a Artic Freezer 7 Pro and Artic Silver Thermal Compound.

Current System is

Gigabyte P35-S3L
4GB XMS2 800Mhz (5-5-5-18) Ram
E7200 CPU
ATI 3650 Graphics Card
250GB Seagate Baracuda 16MB Cache Hardrive.
Antec Sonata Case - 2x120MM Fans.

Room Temperture is quite high in my room though which sucks - Not sure on estimate though.

Anyway I am planning to overclock now - just wondering if I use 400*9.5 multiplier (3.8ghz) - will I need to increase voltage - if so what is a safe amount?

As a newbie it might be best I dont' increase voltate so maybe 333x9.5 multiplier (3.6Ghz) - I'm assuming I can do that on stock voltage? - will that decrease my RAM speed though? (quite possibly a v.dumb question) I am unsure what the RAM ratio 2.0/3.5 etc means can someone explains in dumbest term poss?

Also is it possible/recommended to overclock my RAM to 1066Mhz? or not a good idea?

I am a completele newbie and given as much information as I can... if you can provide me wiht a some setting to edit in BIOS and I'll run the system testing software to make sure its stable?

I've read the guides and have a sort of understanding, just like clarification and some extra guidance from the experts lol
 
i'd go with the 300 fsb for starters, should be fine on stock volts.

anything under 400fsb will be an underclock for you're memory, but thats not an issue imo.

the ram ratio is used to get the ram speed, whereby you take the fsb (to start 300) and multiply it by the ratio (for example 2.0) which will give the memory speed of 600fsb.

i wouldnt go above 1.4v on the processor, also make sure you have core temp or real temp, long as it stays under 60 degrees when loaded (running something like prime95 for 2 hrs) you should be fine.

333x9.5 = 3.164Ghz, 379x9.5 = 3.6Ghz.

My e7200 can do 315x9.5 = 2.992Ghz wiht stock volts but any higher and othros crashes aftera bout 15 seconds. (stock volts for me are 1.1375v)

To get 3.6ghz i would ecpect the Vcore to be around 1.275v, maybe higher.

You got good setup apart from the memory, however you have the 9.5 multiplier which should help there.

I would gladly start with the following settings:

FSB 340
multiplier 9.5
Vcore 1.275v
memory multiplier 2.0x
memory timings 4-4-4-12
ram voltage - 2.1v
Northbridge volta, +0.1v
whatever other voltage +0.1v

Boot up ( should boot without probs ),
open up cpu-z, core temp + real temp and orthos.
Start orthos blend test, watch your voltage in CPU-Z and temps in both core temp and real temp.

Run it for few hrs, if no errors, up fsb to 350 and repeat.
If you get errors, up the voltage by one notch, if you still get errors, run small fft cpu test and see if it gives errors, if yes, add another notch of voltage, if not, run memtest to check the memory for any problems, if memory gives you an errors at this speed then you're fu**ed... sell it and buy new one ;-).
 
Thats the sort of info I want, If you were feeling really brave - what would you do to get to 3.8ghz - that wya memory is running at its full speed then as well...

Also why do peopleoverclock CPU if below 3.8 if it slows down the memory?
 
once you fix the overclock on your cpu you can then set to work on overcocking your memory so often the memory isnt running slower but faster.

I would proablbly start at 333x9 with 1.15V then if its unstalbe add the volts in notches until at least 3 hours prime stable.

Thats the slooooow way.

Personally I would start with 400x9.5 and 1.55v, check if stable and then start dropping volt or upping it more if temps are ok ;-).

-- wouldnt advise this way to someone new tho.


Sooner or later he will need to up the voltage anyways, so why wait with it and test at 1.15 and waste your time, he isnt going to get 3.4+ with this kind of voltage no matter how good the chip is.

Last night ran orthos for 13 hours at the following:

CPU Clock Ratio: 9.0x
Fine CPU Clock Ratio : 0.5x
CPU Frequency: 3.8ghz
CPU Host Frequency: 401mhz
Memory Multiplier: 2.0x
DRam Timing: 4-4-4-12
MCH Voltage: +0.1v
FSB Volatge: +0.1v
DRam Voltage: +0.3v
Vcore: 1.39375v

Temps never went about 54c according to real temp, so i would say start off at 1.4 vcore and work down from there, am trying 1.38750 vcore on mine now
Watch out for the FB heatsink, on my mobo it gets stupidly hot, cant touch it for more that 2 seconds :eek:
