Hi all
im completely new to this, I am pretty good with electronics and as a living build electrical control panels for high speed bottling plants so am not a total clot,
Im not really up to date with the hardware but this is what I want to do… I have introduced my Step dad into internet gaming and he is hooked, (call of duty etc) only problem is he has a …… sorry to swear… a Dell…. .

For his Birthday I bought him a Thermaltake VB1000SWS case, now for Christmas my Mum, sister and I want to get him some bits, I have got an old Gainward 6800ultra for him from my PC and I also installed a bigger power supply in his Dell
Which I believe was 600Watt so I want to rob the Dell of the following and any other bits that you guys might suggest

DVD Drive,
CD Burner
80 Gig hard drive
Power supply

Then we are gonna buy the following from here (Unless advised otherwise)
and are on a budget.
MSI K9N Neo-F nForce 550 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz (Socket AM2)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ST3320620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache

Im not sure if the gig of ram from Dell will fit and I want to use the old 80gig hard drive as drive 'D' for him to store pictures on etc, or any other bits I might need or if im completely barking up the wrong tree…. Please help me Im a Newby to this but very interested in learning and understanding, and then having the satisfaction of building my first PC (for a internet gaming 60 year old step dad) then I can start turning mine into the ultimate games machine  all help kindly accepted.
Cheers

hmmm. that seems a good setup for its price.

even tho a lot of people are going to say go for the core2duo instead, i think for that price, its a good deal. i was going to say go for the intel core2duo but there a lot more.

allso, remember if your using the old hdd, back it up first and reinstall xp, cause old drivers will try to load when you install new parts ;)

Ahhh good point, its AGP but to be honest it doesn't matter I have decided to get him a new one as a mate of mine asked if he could buy the card of me weeks ago and I said yes so not a problem... so for cost sake something like
Asus GeForce EN7300GS-HTD 256MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) should do him for now or is it pants?????

So is there anything im missing as im gonna place the order by Saturday...
if not then cheers for the help and will be on again when I upgrade mine

Yeah sorry that was a really cheap it out choice and I fell guilty now for even mentioning it :( , he did buy himself a new graphics card coz he wanted to play call of duty 2 but his Pc kept crashing, im sure he spent about 90 quid so and it was about 5 months ago... but not sure what it is...
He has played on my system and thinks its lightening (which it is to the old dell) but my system is pretty old now.. maybe I should select a different Mother board one with AGP or is that a waste of time?

You should feel even more guilty for even mentioning getting an AGP mobo ;)

Definitely go for PCI-E so you get a lot more choice of graphics cards in the future.

The card he bought for the Dell is likely to be AGP so he'll need new graphics card anyway. How much is your mate paying you for that 6800ultra?? Might just be enough for a 7600GT, or a 7900GS even.

I doubt you'll be able to use the psu from the Dell. It's probably rubbish and quite possibly built into the case.

They like to make sure that their pc components don't work with any other setup..swines!!!
