right! where to begin!

let me start by saying that i am a complete total utter novice, i'm also not very good with computer terminology, so please have a little patience if i don't understand.

right. I have decided to have a crack at upgrading my computer ( seemed like a good idea at the time), i have an E8400, 4 gig corsair ram, and and abit ip 35 pro mobo, i am upgrading from amd athlon. Anyway, i have taken all the old components out, installed the cpu to the mobo, put my cpu fan on, and installed the motherboard to the computer. i have then turned on the puter, (after spending hours trying to figure out where the plugs go) and it turns itself off practically straight away. Is there something i should be doing before turning the computer on?, or would it be that i may not have installed the fan or cpu correctly?, or even worse, should i have done something when my old stuff was installed, ready for my new upgrade?, thanks for any help you may be able to give me

have you made sure that the only motherboard mounts in the case are ones screwed down to the motherboard ?

try running with 1 stick of ram in different memory slots.

not sure if the ip35 will take the 8400 processor without a bios update

Make sure that you have used the motherboard spacers, and not screwed the motherboard directly onto the case.

will short out the motherboard which is very bad.

have you tried clearing cmos by removing the little battery on the board for 5 mins?

i built my bro a rig with a 5200 chip inside worked fine with original bios so its probs not the processor as yours is dual maybe require bios update for quad i think. hope that helps :)

Haha, I did that when I built my first PC, had a friend check it over and he pointed it out to me, luckily I didn't turn the thing on :p

Back to your problem, is the ram in securely? Or do you have any other ram slots which have the white clips open?

righty, lets get to answering some questions :).

the motherboard is on spacers, when i unscrewed my old one, the new went straight in it's place.

i have tried my system at various stages, i have tried it with all the connectors and graphics card and ram installed, and then i have tried turning it on removing one item at a time until i only have the motherboard left plugged in. I've read on some other (lesser :p) tech forums about people experiencing the same problem, and there are a number of possible outcomes, like the chip is not installed properly, or the hsf isn't close enough to the chip. but the cpu can only go in one way, and my hsf is definately close enough to the chip. i'm at a bit of a loss really, so i guess i'll have to wait patiently for my IT pal to come over. thanks for trying to help though, nice to know these forums are here:D

Hmmm, it'll be either something very simple, or one of the parts will be dead.

Either way, you'll get it sorted. First builds are always a bit shaky :)

just wanted to run something by you all.

do you think my problem could lie with the cpu?. as in my first post, i've connected everything up. apart from the monitor, and then turned the computer on, and then it turns off again after a few seconds. i've slowly removed components , and unplugged cables, the last two things i tried, was just the motherboard and one stick of ram, and then i tried without the ram, but alas it was the same old story, switch the computer on, the fans fire up, and then it turns off again after a couple of seconds. so i was just wondering? could it be a faulty cpu?, sorry for the wall of text

it could very easily be a faulty cpu mate - it does sound suspicious. Do you know anyone else who has a simliar comp that you can try it in?

just a thought my m8 got a simalr problem when he was doing an am2

have u put the power header from psu to mobo the 4 pin 1

this is where i sound like a total novice and everyone reading these posts thinks *what a pleb*, but no, i don't think so. i have connected the 24 pin plug to the mobo, and the power switch, along with all the fans, but i'm still having the same problem, i'm not aware of a four pin plug that connects to the mobo

may be an 8 pin connector?
There is usually either 4 or 8 pin to supply poer to the cpu i beleive :)
or power to the gfx card?maybe a 6 pin connector to that you missed?
just found a piccy and it looks like an 8 pin top left of the mobo by the top copper heatpipe heatsink

There is a 4/8 pin power header by the cpu, you will need to plug the power in there.
Also try a CMOS reset and only 1 stick of ram.

Edit: Does the lcd readout show any codes.

In the case of the ip-35, it's actually an 8 pin.
Look at the mothertboard from above with the RAM slots nearest to you. In the top right is a black 8 pin housing. Your Power supply unit will have either an 8 pin like this or a 4 pin, which looks like one half of this.
In either case, you need to plug it in. If it's an 8 pin just plug it in. If it's a 4 pin, then half of it will fit into half of the pins. Don't worry, it can only go in the correct way so take your time.
Not having this plugged in WILL cause the PC to not start, it's required IN ADDITION to the 24 pin.
So if this is the problem : good news - it's solved !

I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!!!

the last peice of advice has made headway!!, turned on my computer, it turned off after a couple of seconds and came back on and went through several other different codes. thanks ever so much

happy happy, like this :D, until i run into another problem!

So it was the 8-pin?

I had that the other week - put it all back together and it wouldn't boot - had me scrambling for POST error code listings...until I realised the plug wasn't in properly :D

Told you it'd be something simple :)
