So I'm going to start buying components for my first build. I've got suggestions from people prior to this and have changed them a little for personal preference.

First of all I want to go with a blue and white colour scheme. Thought I might as well since I was spending so much money (for me anyway) on it. Anyway I've researched the specs I'll achieve with this and as a main use for gaming I understand that it will handle literally any game with very playable framerate on max settings at 720/1080.

GPU: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X Vapor-X OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Card - £239.99
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail - £169.99
Motherboard: MSI Z97-G55 SLI Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard - £84.60
PSU: SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 650W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black - £79.99
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Arctic White 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CML8GX3M2A1600C9W) - £74.99
Case: NZXT Phantom 240 Midi-Tower - White - £65.99
SSD: Kingston HyperX 3K SSD 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive Black / White Finish (KE-S32120-W) - £62.99
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD10EZEX - OEM ** Single Platter ** HDD - £42.95
Monitor: IIyama Prolite E2473HS 24" Widescreen LED Monitor - Black - £119.99

Total: £965.59

The GPU was originally recommended was a different R9 280x however this one seemed better.
CPU was a no brainer as it seems it's the best one for gaming without spending too much.
Again I was recommended a cheaper motherboard but this went with my colour scheme and plus it's extremely future proof for upgrades.
The PSU had to be somewhat modular as the case I chose wasn't supposed to be extremely cable friendly so I wanted as little wireclutter as possible.
The case looks amazing for me, great aesthetics, still decent at cable management and has plenty of HDD/SSDs slots. May be a little expensive but I've seen it on amazon recently for about £10 less.

I also need to add an optical drive, I'll just get a cheap one not much need for it aside from installing, I also need to get OS but as a student I can get it for cheaper. I will also invest in some extra case fans, appreciate some suggestions! Also if there's something I really need to change that will make it better and is white/blue/black, I'll be happy to reconsider.

Hi and welcome

Another £12 gets you a 290 rather than that 280X.

Another £18 gets you a 256GB SSD

Faster and cheaper RAM

Thanks guys,

Taken ExRayTeds advice of upgrading the SSD size and the upgraded ram.

Didn't realize my GPU budget was so close to the next "tier" of video cards. After some research and looking at a bunch of discussions on it, it seems the better card is the GTX 970 (Originally I was going to go with an Nvidia card for some reason I was attracted to them more than AMD) especially at this price.

The only thing I'm pondering is the manufacturer Inno3D. I know it's not a huge difference in performance between different manufacturers (probably a few frames difference but every little helps!) but I was just wondering if anyone actually owns it since I've never heard the name and I've seen no reviews online... How's the cooling on it? It's a lot cheaper then most 970's and seems like the best card in that price range, it's just the name that's bugging me... Maybe I'm just being too paranoid!

Again thanks for all your input!

I've heard pretty bad things about the EVGA's fan problems, otherwise that'd be my choice and the msi, which looks great and seems to be one of the best ones, is red which is not what I really wanted.

The perfect card it seems for me is the gigabyte, it has a lot of positive feedback as being the best card, overclocked well out of the box and extremely overclockable. It's also supposed to be pretty quiet and it runs really cool at full load which is something I was hoping for. As a added bonus it'll fit well with my blue/white colour scheme...

The only two problems was firstly, it was £50 higher then the cards I was going to get, which I'm on a really tight £1000 budget for now, however I've took away the 1tb hard drive for now as I will be able to buy it later in October and stuck with just the SSD. Mainly because I have external hard drives (3tb) and I can like with 200GB for a month or so since I have my laptop.

The last problem is my case is fairly small and I can imagine it being quite cramped. It's the NZXT Phantom 240 Midi-Tower, and I'll have to remove the HDD cage for it to fit in. This does mean losing half my hard drive space however I still have another bay open for a hard drive (will probably invest in a 2tb so I have less need for multiple hard drives) or if the worst comes to the worst I have 2 more 5.25" bays (which I can get a cage thingy for) or just more external hard drives!

Do you think the gigabyte will have enough room in the case though in terms of airflow? I'll also invest in more fans later this year, as I'm not looking to really overclock (due to the high core speeds from the gigabyte) straight away anyway, especially since I'll be on 1080p for now...
