Right, I had a go at this panoramic nonsense, and came up with this:

nyc_hilton_panorama.jpg

Huge 20MB version here

Now, I've got a few questions. First thing is that I need to lop the right bit off, as it's still got a bit of window frame in it, also there's something seriously wrong going on with the border at the top that needs to be sorted out. But anyway. Stiched with PS CS2, taken with a Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 EX DG macro on a 350d. F4 at about 1/600 (can't remember offhand) on a 350d.

1) I took about 6 shots, but actually only ended up using 4. Generally, do people leave out shots, or is it best to try and use all of them?

2) Originally, I tried to do this pointing more at the sky, but I found that if the camera is not absolutely horizonal, there's problems stiching it together because of incorrect directions straight lines go in at the edge of the photo. Therefore buildings don't line up. But even with it as horizontal as I could, there was still some distortion. Is there anything I can do to each shot to remove the distortion first so they line up better? I did it this time by stiching it together in perspective mode and then chopping off lots of the picture.

3) Even though each shot had the same focus, and settings, sometimes the skies didn't match, different colour. Is this going to be because of using AWB?

Any other tips or pointers would be great :)

Bonus points for anyone who can guess the hotel and floor without looking at the filename......... :)

Nice effort manually Stitching that!

To make your life a lot easier download AutoSitch http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html

Will Stitch them togeather in a matter of seconds :) It is also capable of sorting out distorion and light falloff etc :) The more images you give it, the better it should be. Can also stitch images vertically aswell as horizontally.

for example this was made up of about 35 images, 3 rows of about 11 going around:

Didn't do it manually, I used the stich feature in CS2. Will give autostich a god though, to see if it's any better.

Have uploaded new versions which are a bit tidier.

can i just say if you made this with 4 shots you presumably took the photos horizontally (landscape) if you took the photos vertically (portrait) you would get more height into the shot and you would end up with an even larger pano :D

great shot by the way
