Well i'll be blunt with you, the last (and actually first) system i bought is a pre built. I actually know most of my knowledge of computers to it, but there's a problem. It's bloody rubbish. The chipset couldn't even run the oldest game i had, so i dropped in an 8400, bob's your uncle. Anyway, here are the specs:

CPU Intel Pentium E2140 - 1.6GHz
Mobo ECS Livermore8
Memory 2GB Micron DDR2 PC25300 - 333MHz
Graphics XFX GeForce 8400

Now i've lived with it, but i can't upgrade much at the minute and i don't want to since i'd rather save up for a new PC, so i thought i'd have a go at the only free way of getting a faster PC. Here's the pictures BEFORE:

Temperatures after running Prime95 for about an hour. It reached those in the first 10 minutes so it's pretty stable.

The CPU, quite bad at stock speeds but i've seen it clock quite well.

Strange, very simplistic motherboard. It all hangs on this though, anybody know anything about it's Bios?

My very bad RAM from some nameless manufacturer. If possible i'll try and overclock this as well.

More of the above...

The Cache... what more is there to say?

Benchmarks from the first free benchmarking software i could find. Mainly for before-after but you know.

Test conditions will be the same, no programs running (except McAffe). And since i haven't actually done it yet (probably not the best thing at 11:15 at night i shall post my results tomorrow. If indeed the Bios has the ability to overclock, which is doubtful. If there's any more benchmarking software you want me to run then do it now. Or any suggestions... I have seen this processor running at 3GHz on stock cooling with stock voltages, so that's best case scenario. Prime95 and the fan was louder than a herd of racing cattle, but good temps i thought so we'll have to wait and see.

OK - so I've just clicked on something like 8 screenies of an E2140 running speedstepped at 1200MHz on an ECS i945G motherboard with PC5300 Cas 5 RAM and you've reserved Post 2. I can only assume that's for when you get it overclocked.

You mention an E8400, but that's nowhere to be seen.

And then you talk about having seen the CPU running at over 3GHz. Is that the CPU in your system or jkust E2140's in general?

And you want to know if anyone knows anything about the BIOS on a motherboard you can't identify (take the side off the case and read the model I'd have thought).

Have you had a look in the BIOS yet?

I am somewhat confused, although if this where you learned about computers, a lot of your other posts make more sense now.

Okay. I've been on here too long obviously.

As it's an Intel i945G chipset, I think it has to be this motherboard;

http://eu.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Pro...goryID=1&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=44&LanID=8

Having downloaded the manual I was quite hopeful as there was a BIOS section called Frequency and Voltage Selection, so I was massively disappointed to see only 4 options;

CPU Clock Ratio
Auto Detect PCI clock
Spread Spectrum
CPU Clock

It does look like you can change the FSB manually, but without the ability to lock the PCIe frequency you probably won't get more than about a 20MHz FSB lift before it starts not booting because it can't find the graphics card.

You can disable the Spread Spectrum though as that usually helps stability. And leave Auto Detect PCI clock Enabled.

Sorry I can't be more helpful than that. Hopefully, when you get the side off, it's not that motherboard.
