I'm trying to decide on my first mech keyboard and just wanted to gauge peoples recommendations etc.

I'll be using it for a mix of everything but the main uses will be gaming, FPS mainly, and typing up work/reports.

I'm thinking Red or Brown switches would be best. I've read the keyboard guide on here, and others elsewhere, and all say blue are more for typing and not great for gaming and I'm hoping for a balance so red/brown seems the road to go down.

As for extras etc I'd like the keys to be lit but don't really mind about anything else.

Thanks in advance.

Browns are meant to be the "middle ground" keys in terms of typing/gaming/noise. To be honest, I don't really see the point of going mechanical for gaming but it certainly makes typing much nicer. I can't remember what the reds are for...aren't they the ones without a "click"?

I'm not going mechanical for gaming as such. Like I say I do a bit of everything on the computer and do a fair amount of typing so that alone for me is reason enough, I mentioned the gaming as I know some types are better than others for that and wanted one that did both well.

I like the look of the CM Storm Quickfire TK but that's only in red here, hence why I was asking if there was much difference between red and brown.

For a first mechanical keyboard you can't go wrong with cherry browns, I bought my first mech board 2 years ago and opted for cherry browns, never looked back and I love it !

Red's were popular on the early corsair keyboards but a lot of companies seem to be running browns now as it's a great balance.

does seem to be browns are the choice for new people to Mechs, blues and red's are more refined to taste and not for everyone
and
no body wants cherry blacks

Just with ref the first post I have blues and have no issues with Gaming.
Maybe I'm not good enough to notice...

The sound is awesome too :D

I have a Filco TKL and the build quality is very good, like I could kill someone with it and then continue to type away. No flashy bits but looks nice

I don't believe in the best "starter" switch.
I heard blues and browns were the best, absolutely hate them. You can game on them, but if you double tap fast enough, it wont register. I had this happen to me regularly.
I only use reds for gaming/typing etc, no double tapping problems, lightest switch and oh so smooth.

EDIT: Answer to your question, red and i believe browns are the lightest (out of the 4) and the quietest would be black, brown or reds.

Browns dont have a click either.

I have just got myself a keyboard with MX brown switches. Feels like a huge improvement over a membrane keyboard without having to get used to it, it's just better. Would highly recommend them, especially for a first mechanical keyboard

Picked up a Gaming K70 (MX Reds) and it's really lovely, coming from a 5 year old Razer Tarantula which never felt 'premium' (but I did get used to it and have it for ages). Got some O-rings in the post from here to stick on my K70 to cut down the clack-clacking from me bottoming the keys constantly :)
