Hey,

I am looking at getting a NAS. Wondering whether to get this one:

My main aim is to use it to put all my photos, videos and music onto it.

Will this box allow me to select who actually has access to what folders?

Will it allow people to have read access to a folder but not write or edit?

Will I just be able to transfer all my music straight from my pc to the NAS and it all work with iTunes?

Will I be able to access the media from a playstation 3 and a Humax PVR?

QNAP or Synology dude. I prefer QNAP as it offers the best and simplest support for us 'non-linux' users. Packages are easy to install and Twonkymedia is awesome for media streaming.

I had a TS-109II, sold it not too long ago and realised how much I missed it - upgraded to a Qnap TS-210 and love it to bits!

Use MKV2VOB to sort out MKV's in a playable format for the PS3 first ;)

Oh jees, silly me, the 211 I think. One on this week only on ocuk. I'm out at the moment so haven't got the full link

so, how do you allow certain devices access to specific folders with specific permissions.

For example. I will require the following setup:

PC1 - full read/write access to everything,
PC2 - read access to 1 particular folder and read/write access to another folder.
All other devices, read access to films folder.

Also, how does the DLNA feature work, can you access content which is in one of the protected areas above?

Why don't you download the manual that will tell everything you need to know and more and you will learn at the same time.

You create Users on the box and then have check box's on what apps and folders that user can see, As said download the manual and have a read the Synology software is Proven over and over again, its so easy to use.

Here is a Screen shot on mine of how you allow people to have permission for folders apps are on another Tap, This is the desktop view in a browser on the synology box its like using a pc desktop just remotel (btw i was at work when doing this and synology box is at home :D )

Neil, the only bit I would unsure of is the Humax PVR - everything else is definately achievable.

They are very easy to setup - the 211J is probably a good choice but you'll need to buy 2 disks for it on top of the price of the NAS too.

you dont "need" to buy two disks to start with you can buy one and wait until you have filled in then buy another by that fine you will probably find disks are upto 4-5tb and will be supported by synologys ever growing supported disks

I stand corrected :D

lol dont worry i thought the same untill i researched it I want to upgrade my single bay 108j as its got a max transfer rate of about 110mbps due to the 200mhz cpu in it, How ever the new ones will actaully use my gigabit lan as i noticed very little increase in speed when i went from 10/100 to 10/100/1000 :(

When buying a NAS box make sure you get one with a Speed that your happy with but tbh most the cheap synology boxs will do pretty impressive speeds now, i can still stream 3 1080p sources to 3 different machines without any problems :D
