Hi there.
After reading and re-reading these forums i have finally got my first stable OC that im fairly happy with.
E6600 @ 3.2
Asus P5N32-E Plus Sli
2Gb GeIl 6400C4 ULL
ACF7 Pro
8800 GTS 640
Started off dissabling everything i diddnt need in the BIOS. Manually setting Vcores for CPU and Ram. 1.325 and 2.1 respectively.
Set out to find a stable FSB. Set my ram to linked 1:1 which i figured would link it with the FSB and take ram out of the equation until i found a stable FSB. It failed to post @ stock and after much scratching of head and reading of forums i figured out the mode i wanted was Sync as i cant enter a FSB only a QFSB >.<
So did that and set ram to Sync and QFSB to 1422Mhz. This ran the ram @ 710Mhz and hurrah it posted first time! Orthos tested for 6 hours Small FFTs and all fine.
Looks like it should be ok. Will leave orthos on another 6 hours see if it completes.
Have a couple of questions however.
Running my Ram in Sync is only giving me 710Mhz as stated above. I would really rather my ram was not underclocked as it seems to defeat the purpose of overclocking.... After reading up some more i could run it unlinked and manually set ram to its rated 800Mhz. But the topics and articles i read had mixed reviews about this. Some hinted at instability running in this mode? Is this true?
Would i be better off trying to find a multiplier to use instead? Or would i be better off upping my QFSB some more and maybe notching the CPU down one multi and running the Ram in Sync mode? 8x Multi 1600Mhz QFSB for example would give me 800Mhz on my ram and 3.2Ghz on CPU. If my Mobo will go that high.
Lastly NVMonitor and Coretemp both read my full load temp @54C after 6 hours orthos. Do i have much headroom left to maybe hit 3.4Ghz? Upping my QFSB to 1511Mhz would give me 3.4Ghz and also push my ram up slightly to 755Mhz which seems more acceptable.
Your thoughts on my next step from here? Any help on tweaking this appreciated
