First oppurtunity for an upgrade in years

Hey all.

First off i'd like to say i'm comfortable in putting components together so the option for buying bits separate is fine.

Now i haven't been up to date with component advances for around 5 years so i'm asking here to ask some professional hobbyists and whenever i needed anything component-wise come here first.. and also because im quite lost and dont know where to start really.

My current system is as follows:

1 - HIS ATI Radeon HD 4850 IceQ 4 Turbo 512MB (PCI-E)
1 - Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-E DDR2 Motherboard
1 - Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.5GHz @ 3.2Ghz
1 - Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB)
1 - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler
1 - Akasa Ultra Quiet 500W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.2 PSU
2 x Maxtor Diamondmax 10 250gb in Raid 0 (err.. 11 years old?)
1 x OCZ Vertex 3 SSD loaded with:
1 - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (Still have disc)
1 - Samsung SM-2253BW Aqua 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor

It's on a lot.. I play games on it, though i have been stopped when i wanted to play some. Witcher 2, Skyrim with mods, Mechwarrior Online, Shogun 2 are all games that i own but i cant play them at a quality to do them justice and get the full experience of them so i end up playing games like Don't Starve, Faster than Light, Torchlight II.

Also, i'm still stuck at directX9, and DDR2 so the reason i'm here is because i'm confused with the options i have.

Though my current thinking is maybe upgrade graphics card and leave the rest alone.. OR just go mad. Upgrade everything, maybe transplant the harddrives but everything else buy brand new with the idea of the new system being capable of taking whats thrown at it for a good few years.

Now, if i go mad.. i wanna go full mad. Dual graphics cards, everything that can be watercooled is, a noise dampened case with the PSU at the bottom.

The reason i would go full mad is because when i started building computers it was from cannabilised bits from my older brothers comp. It was a hobby back then.. i made air vents from tinfoil, had a manual variable resistor to control the fans to give it a "power mode" (though obviously, not really but to my imagination it was like Tracker's car from M.A.S.K flying off over the horizon).

I had an old schoolbook i would draw watercooling block designs on, peltier cooler calculations in etc. There was a guy in Grimsby near where i lived who had been injured in a motorbike accident and was wheelchair bound but he was a celebrity to me, he had a watercooling system that went outside his house, underground a bit.. then back in, he'd even overclocked his electric wheelchair so it would do about 12mph.

So if i build a computer again... its for the teenager that lives on inside me. I want to to look upon it like its capable of anything, but only just.

Now price wise.. it doesnt matter, however i dont want to spend over £400 on graphics cards or £200 on a cpu. I would like it to be built from bits that when they came out.. they were the great at what they did, not the best.. but reliable and hardy enough to get pushed further.

Now the last requirement may seem fanboi-ish and maybe it is, but to me.. it's a choice from respect.. and to honour companies that i always admired. Something about them that made me nod my head and think "yeah.. they're doing that right"

So it must have:

Sapphire ATi graphics card(s)
AMD processor
have whatever has become "basic standard" for new builds in terms of RAM density, cpu cores, directX version.

Ok forget the upgrade graphics card only option.. i'm making this thing.. dont care if it takes 3 months to setup right, don't care if its a rag-tag bunch of components that together make the team from the Mighty Ducks film.. eventually it will show its strength.

So.. where do i start? :D

Infact, why dont i make a Pc on behalf of all enthusiasts? If there's a particular component you got that still brings a smile to you face, tell me about it, maybe its just a fan you got.. or a cable but to you it was the best cable ever!

And finally, thanks for always being here, and for reading this post :)

maybe something like that, gigabyte have uk rma base.. gfx card is great bang for buck and is fine with your current psu - and latest haswell i5 overclock-able cpu.

Your Panel is 1680x1050 so could do with an upgrade really to make the most of a highend system. I'd go intel myself, I still have an AMD PhenomII system for HTPC use but with my own cash now it's intel for new builds.

* 144Hz gaming panel at 1080P
* Case has excellent watercooling support. inc a bargain CLC to get you going
* GPU is great bang for buck and also comes with free games (offer expires 31st)
* Awesome OC'ing mobo for the i5K at a respectable price. It will allow dual GPUs
* Seasonic made PSU with enough juice for Xfire.

That case is perfect, its incredible!

I took most of your bits (i think you're right about intel) but through in a set of headphones and upgraded mobo/cpu/ram

If i knew how to add them into a post in a fashion like you have i would but i'll just say they were these:

Asus X79 Sabertooth Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard

Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail

Corsair Vengeance Gold 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9G)

They work well together?

The 3820 is actually worse than the ivy 3770K. Only benefit is you can upgrade to the IVY-E CPUs. The SB-E Hexcores are expensive though so the IVY-E's will be too.

If you think you need the Hyperthreading you can get the Haswell i7K with a H100i bundle with it. Those refurb'd H100 have been on pre-order for a while and could delay the build a bit. I'd still go with the Z87-X OC it's an awesome mobo well worth the £160

Oh didnt even know that overclockers did bundles, thanks for that. Gonna look at the all the bits in detail and decide over the next week or so.

Thanks a lot for your guru-ism bud!

They do mobo bundles pre-overclocked but I'd buy the bits I want separately and do the OC myself.
