First overclock help!

i7 950 Bloomfield
Asus Sabertooth X58
Patriot Viper 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Triple Channel
Corsair HX850W
Titan Fenrir EVO (Air cooler)

Its the first time iv tryed to overclock and that is what i have to play with. Im following a starter guide and its given me a basic overclock to learn.

BCLK = 180Mhz
CPU = 3.6Ghz
Memory = DDR3-1440 (uncore @ 2880MHz)

Do you you guys think i can achieve this and maybe a little more with my current cooler :confused:
 
im isolating the BCLK from everything else by lowering these values:

CPU clock ratio to x15 (my default was x24)
Memory multiplier to x6 (my default was ×8)

im then suposed to end up with this after increasing BCLK from 133 to 150 - cpu 2250MHz, uncore = 2400MHz, memory = 450MHz

below is a screenshot of what i have. cpu and memory speeds looks ok but i dont know where to look or how to work out the uncore?

i have just run 3 loops of IntelBurnTest with 8 threads selected.

so BCLK @ 150Mhz is stable. I will increase to 160Mhz and test.


thanks wazza for your reply. i will try aim for that. do you think it could be done with a Titan Fenrir EVO cooler?
 
to go from 150Mhz bclk to 160 the guide told me to add 0.025v to QPI/VTT voltage.

do i need to increase the QPI/VTT voltage everytime i add 10Mhz to the BCLK? or can i try 170Mhz without adding? or does not adding the extra voltage stop the memory from being overclocked eventually?

im not sure if the QPI/VTT voltage is one i need to keep as low as possible to keep heat down.
 
Ok! this is what i have so far for my base clock.

Speed - 2.7Ghz
BCLK - 180Mhz
Multiplier - x15
DRAM freq - DDR3-1083Mhz
UCLK freq - 2165Mhz
QPI/DRAM - 1.25v
IOH voltage - 1.10v

It has passed IntelBurnTest with maximum stress level on 8 threads. I ran it 3 times.

Max temperature on one of the cores was 75

what do you guys think?
 
iv lowered BCLK back to 130Mhz to test for stable memory overclock.

i tryed this but it failed IntelBurnTest half way through 2nd loop.

DRAM - 900Mhz
FSB/DRAM - 2/12
UCLK - 3600Mhz

QPI/DRAM - 1.30v
DRAM voltage - 1.65v (max i can go)

any ideas?

Add: I tryed increasing QPI/DRAM to 1.3125v but it failed again.
Add: QPI/DRAM to 1.3250v but failed.

the ram is rated at 1600mhz

the 900mhz was x2 for 1800mhz because its DDR3, is that correct? rig boots up fine when oc to 1800mhz, it finishes 2 loops of intelburn but fails at start of 3rd.

this ram back when i bought it was a great overclocker. overclock3D guys got 1800mhz with ease. here is conclusion from review: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/...-12800_1600mhz_viper_series_low_latency_kit/6

i have downclocked everything again and trying a higher bclk incase its a bclk blackhole (just read about it)

im trying this

bclk - 190
multiplier - x12
offset - 0.0750v
qpi/dram - 1.40v

ADD: the above passed intelburntest on max stress with 8 threads, looped 3 times. Core voltage didnt go above 1.0v and max core temp was 53.

is it better to have the higher bclk and lower multiplier or lower bclk/higher multi to get desired speed?

should i try for 200mhz bclk? i not sure the best way to have it.

i dont think its an unstable bclk because its just passed a 5 loop of intelburntest with these settings

bclk - 200
multiplier - x12
offset - 0.0750v (core voltage didnt go above 1.0v on full load)
qpi/dram - 1.4v
ioh voltage - 1.1v


im gonna test 200bclk with qpi 1.3v to see if it can pass.

update: passed with qpi/dram @ 1.3v

the Titan Fenrir Evo isnt doing too bad with temps considering the mount and thermal paste was done 4 years ago. some dust between fins aswell.

this screenshot was taken after looping IntelBurnTest 5 times on max stress for 8 threads. it passed.

max vcore - 1.264v
max temp - 79c
qpi/dram - 1.325v

i would love to get to 4Ghz with the titan.

can anyone suggest any fine tuning to get me their?
 
i tryed this for 4Ghz it boots fine but fails intelburntest.

bclk - 175
multiplier - x23 (increased from x22)
offset - 0.08125v (increased from 0.075v)
qpi/dram - 1.325

why would increasing the multiplier make it unstable even tho i increased the offset with it? i thought increase in bclk would risk it more.

is the offset being added to a default voltage? im not to sure.

im not sure what is safe voltage for a 950.

can you show me the range il be working within and what is mid and high voltages for a 950?
 
ha! wazza, you were basically spot on.

this is what i have edged up to. it just passed a 3 loop of intelburntest, il stress for longer but looking good. Max temp stayed at 80. i must say again, not bad for a £30 air cooler. Looking at these settings so far, can you tell if the 950 i have is going to be a good clocker? vcore is at the bottom end of your estimate for 4Ghz. better cooling needed ofcourse.

Vcore - 1.30625v
QPI - 1.35v
IOH - 1.16v

i will have to make adjustments, rig has been on since 11am but just got blue screen while browsing net, so its not stable.

would lowering the bclk and increasing the multiplier so it stays at 4ghz give me a chance at getting it stable? then maybe i can take an increment or 2 off the vcore to help temps? am i on the right track thinking like this?

iv set the vcore manual by the way, dont have an offset now.

got the ram up to 1758Mhz qpi - 1.33125v

auto timings are 9 9 9 24

it passed 5 loop of intelburntest :O

i want 1800Mhz :)


it wont let me use x24 or x25 multiplier for cpu. keeps settings itself to x23. whys that?
