Hi i read the overclock Guide, and thought hey ok why not try this out,

The only thing i have increased is the FSB from 1333Mhz to 1383Mhz the CPU multiplyer is @ default x9

And now i am getting a 3.1Ghz instead of 3Ghz

Supprisingly im quite happy with myself.

I know this is a tiny overclock. At the moment i am running the stock cooler and CPU Temp is at 48C idle.

I got a Intel 6850E. How much further can i take my 6850?

And at what are good tempretures to run your CPU?

What are temps to think about getting different cooling?

If i am doing anything wrong by just upping the FSB can you please tell me?

How do i know my Rig is stable?

In order to check stability you need to downlaod a program called prime 95, Once you have it run the small fft test for half an hour.

Generally you don't want temps overs 70 or any errors in a half our prime 95 test.

An E6850 should do 3.6 at 1400FSB without any bother at all, stock cooling should be fine for that kind of overclock.

Use Orthos to check its stable first. I would let it run for a fair bit longer than half and hour, I would say anywhere between several hours to 24 hours.

Make sure that your ram timings and voltage is set correctly in the bios first.

Thanks for the reply guys

I was thinking about this heatsink

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-039-TR&tool=3

with maybe 2 x 120mm fans one intake and one outtake :) this is probs overkill and not needed? Well i will be taking the Overclocking Slow as i am still new to it. Maybe up the Overclock by 0.1 Ghz a week? I will deffently need to run Prime95 then for about 8 hours to make sure its stable? I can't run it for 24 hours straight. My PC is quite noise with 2 Raptors inside and a lot of load fans ;) plus the bright LEDs keep me awake haha

A TRUE with a single good 120mm fan (Yate Look or a Sharkoon Silent Eagle) is a fantastic choice. However it dependso n your budget really, look at that price at the moment. I assume you have a spare kidney? ;)

Well i earn to much money and still live with my parents, and before anyone says GO WATERCOOLING, i don't trust myself with water and computer parts yet ;)

a TRUE is the heatsink i said?

Is there much difference between the Extreme and the none extreme?

Water is good but good air cooling competes easily with water.
Yeah TRUE = ThermalRite Ultra Extreme, which is the one you said. As for is there much difference? I am not sure on that, have a look for some benchies, google will pull a lot up

Just played some COd and Everrest tells me my CPU goes 64C on Load and idles at 51C well thats 10 minutes after gaming

The motherboard stays nice and cool with 24C to max 39C

I think i need to invest in other cooling, cos i only overclocked it a 100mhz and the temps went high

TRUE Push or Pull? or both Push and Pull?

Thanks refulx,

I think this will help a little but i don't know.

I will check if i have enough thermalpast on it, clean out the Heatsink and fan from dust.
Would the cable management inside my PC matter? It is all over the place?

The only thing i have changed is the FSB. I will tell you some more settings when i get home.

Thanks

Dom

Yeah, definitely check that the cooler is seated properly and reapply the paste. You'll probably want an aftermarket cooler anyway because they're quieter as well as being more efficient.

Cable management is important for more than aesthetics because cables all over the shop can really wreck airflow. Unplug everything, grab some cable ties and organise it all as best you can :)

yeah i am thinking about going TRUE with 2 x 120 fans and a fan controler, i might downclock my system to 3.2ghz for now and run Prime95 and see what temps and stable system i get.

If it rains i will have a little project at hand. Clean CPU fan/Heatsink. Sort out the cable managemet.

I have read through the beginners guid again and will do so again when i get home.

I seem to get a little more and more the more i read it =]

Thanks everybody for your help and i will keep you lot updated. That is if anybody cares haha

get some ocz freeze or as mx-2 or something and a TRUE and youll see MUCH better temps.
just upping the fsb is fine, until you reaqcj a limit then you will have to look at other options.
