First Overclock tonight! Advice please

Ok, well I thought what the Hell, and tried cramming it up to 3.82GHz, cranked the VCore up to 1.475 and ORTHOS failed almost immediately, and the CustomPC benchmark crashed in the final stage. Don't fancy pushing voltage higher for now, I'll leave it at 3.6 and VcCore at 1.39375. I'll def give it a spanking when I get a new processor, and play around with NB values!

3dmark06 @ 3.0 = 12164
3dmark06 @ 3.6 = 13782
3dmark06 @ 3.8 = 14234

CustomPC @ 3.0 = 852
CustomPC @ 3.6 = 950

I also removed 2GB of my slower RAM, I've seen no discernable change in normal use apart from greater stability and I can actually have it at 800MHz, and the CustomPC image benchmark was slightly lower.

Hi James,

Well done for attaining 3.6 and also for not being afraid to put some volts through that e6850.

Some guy on this forum (think maybe pastymuncher?) did a very good review on lots of different processors clocked to different amounts and tested them with various apps. and found that the benifits for gaming (more fps) was very small when clocked past 3.6.

btw. what temps did you get with vcore @ 1.475. Hope you dont mind me asking but you dont get many peeps with e6850.

Hi, I don't mind at all! I know what you mean about the lack of 6850s, everyone seems to have a 6600 or i7. That's quite cool to hear about the lack of benefit of going above 3.6, means I dn't feel bad for missing out on anything :p

Here's the temp breakdown for you:

3.6 @ 1.3975 - 25 Celcius Ambient Temp (today I'm getting much higher temps even with VCore at 1.375, I'll see how these go over the weekend & update)

Idle = 35
Load = 56

3.8 @ 1.475 - 24 Celcius Ambient Temp

Idle = 43
Load = 64

I want to get my volts down as low as yours when running at 3.6 but ORTHOS just fails straight away/won't boot.

I am still testing right now the 3.6 @ 1.33125v, so i aint certain she is stable yet. Been running prime small fft and blend for about an hour each today, passed, but get bored any longer.
My aim is to get game stable 24/7 but without too much heat/noise.

What software are you reading ambient temps from. I have speedfan and HW monitor, but the only ambient i see is on speedfan which says 40C, but using a fairly accurate thermometer sitting beside my case --- reads 20C.

Speedfan gives the ambient internal case temp - since it doesn't have a thermometer outside the case, that's the best it can go. It's an indicator of how well air is moving through the case.

40 = inside, 20 = the room.

Thanks Audigex for reply,

But how can this be? Speedfan now says 38C, but core temp, real temp and HW monitor all say my cores are at 37/40C idle using a tJ MAX OF 100c.

Surely they cant be that close to ambient?

Please excuse my ignorance, but i would like to know

I think i am becoming an OCD temp whore

I'm using a thermometer on my desk to read ambient temperature outside my case...must say it's not THE most accurate piece of equipment in the world, but I'm hoping it's reasonably constant.

Though from what you've been saying sumyungi, there's no reason why your cores at idle wouldn't be close to ambient temps inside your case.
