Below are the specs of my new build:

Asus ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB
Core i5 750 2.66Ghz
Asus P7P55D Pro
Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
Corsair TX 650W ATX
Antec 300 Case
Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus

I thought I'd give OCing a go and get a little more juice out of my recent purchase :) I'm completeley new to this and would appreciate any advice. I've read the OC Stickies and have a somewhat frazzled brain!

This is my first attempt. I didn't want to do anything too drastic and risk causing any of my new toys to blow up!

Only things I changed in BIOS was:

AI Tweak - Manual
BCLK - 165mhz (was 133mhz)

Pathetic I know, but I thought i'd just dip my big toe in first and come here for some sound advice. After an hour of Prime95 my CPU temperature was sitting at ~65.

Any pointers? :)

Back again! :D

Here's my latest attempt, 1 hour of Prim95 w/o errors so far....

A few questions if anyone can elighten me,

1) Are those temperatures too hot? I have an Antec 300 so can add 2 more 120mm fans on the front intake if needed.

2) Voltages... I'm clueless, should I be manually setting them as atm they're on auto.

3) Memory, should I be looking at tinkering with the timings to get it nearer to 1600MHZ?

Basically any pointers to an efficient and stable OC would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Mike

anything below 75 is fine imo, 1.2v for 3.7ghz thats impressive although I dont know much about Overclocking I5's lol but I do know its a beast of a cpu nice one :p

Have to remember the higher your CPU clock sometimes the lower your mem will be but CPU is more important than memory in most cases if not all - I'm sure there is ppl on here who can get you upto 4ghz pretty easy - but you might need some more cooling / better CPU cooler - I dont really know much about the one you have so I cant really comment on that.

But nice job on your first try XD

Thanks Jotunkaiser!

I'm happy with the 3.7ghz for now, seems to run at nice temperatures. Vcore is set to auto @ 1.2v and DRAM set manual at 1.65v, I've read they are pretty safe values?

One thing I didn't realise is that the DRAM value displayed in CPU-Z is only half the actual value. So ~1500mhz I can live with :)

On a side note, I've also clocked my Asus 5850 to 900mhz Core and 1300mhz memory. Seen some nice benchmark improvements.

Overall I'm happy with what I've accomplished. Who knows, may even push for 4Ghz when the time arises :D

nice clocks, decent temps and really nice vcore :)

keep upping the bclk until you find instability, then up the vcore a tad.

i'd also recommend not letting temps exceed 80oC

good luck :)

Mowlio - It wasn't as difficult as I'd expected! Although running Prim95 for 4 Hours and hit an error. Upped the Vcore to 1.25 and so far so good. Just google it as there's tonnes of information out there :)

teist3d0n3 - I was aiming to keep temps sub ~75. Not sure if I'm going to push for 4Ghz.... yet! :D
