Hi,

Im new to the world of creating websites both coding and designing..

Recently I have spent some time learning css and html purely thanks to this forum...

I have put together a site for a charity I volunteer for but the main problem is the first page...

They wont give me any info for the first page and the director is away for a month or more than I believe and I just want to finish it asap...

Therefore I really need some help in deciding how to design / create the first page...

I tried something with photos but the problem is as you guys already know if viewed in smaller or bigger browsers the pictures wont be seen or will be pixelated...

Therefore I wondered if you guys had any tips as to how I could overcome creating the first page without having any text lol if possible, so that it will fit most browser windows...i.e. 800 x 600, 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024....

Ive even thought about having a flash file as the first page but then if someone skips the intro and goes into first page - it cant be about us lol....wont look right...

All help and advice would be most appreciated...

Thanks in advance..

Here it is

I realise I have to downsize some pics on other pages so they wont look pixelated on diff browsers as well all the headers...I created the site in 1280 x 1024 browser but now have to add % into coding so that it will look right for browsers mentioned above...I am also aware of other changes it requires...however my main prob is the first page grrrr lol oh im going to change the background inside the middle content box to avoid the repeat on it altogether cuz i know it looks ghey :p ......

please help.....im a n00b, confused and running out of braincells lol....

thanks

could really do with some help on this guys...

please holla your thoughts at me...

thanks in advance...

Well in my totally unqualified opinion, I think you should just design it in 800x600 and it will just look smaller on larger resolutions. Stretching to fit the screen may be ok if the page consists of just shapes and colours but with images it gets a little more difficult.

I designed this website in 800x600 resolution and it still looks good on my monitor which is 1280x1024.

See www.mfdl.co.uk

I would consider putting the navigation bar on top (or to one side) for easier accesibility to the rest of the site (so the user doesn't have to scroll down to search for it - minor point, I know).

The rest of the site looks good, but some pages (eg this one) kinda overflow to the bottom of the page (past the border) - I'm using firefox. Also, I'd maybe make it centre or left aligned otherwise you have to scroll right to get to the content. Nice work so far, though :)

Try making the navigation buttons the same on every page, it becomes confusing when they keep moving places and there being different numbers of buttons on each page

Also put a page title on each page, so that it doesn't say untitled document in the name bar.

thanks for your responses and help so far...its most appreciated...

I am aware some of the alignment is out, the headings are missings and in some cases the buttons are all over the place, I aim to get that cleared up asap..

However my problems unfortunately hasnt been resolved which is how does one create a front page without any text?? lol .....

As you can see and tell the images I have already on the first page will look really small or pixelated, although I understand what you guys are saying that it wont look too bad as the viewers browser increases..Ideally I thought someone would have an idea how I could get around this?

Would be most appreciated if someone has any ideas re: my first page...

Thanx in advance..

Cheers!!!

altho my question was more for the first page as per the above posts :)
i know, but having read "the above posts" (particularly yours) i have absolutely no clue what you are going for, and therfore can't suggest anything.
sorry dude.

perhaps you could take a look at some other websites and link us to something you like, so we know where you are coming from. :/

to clarify:

I am seeking layout ideas for my first page as I cannot use the photos that are already there because in smaller browser sizes i.e. 800 x 600 they may look right however when the viewer browser is set to 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024 those photos will look pixelated...

Therefore as I have no text I was seeking ideas from "kick ass" photoshop or other similar software users for an idea how best to overcome my problem so no matter what the viewer browser is set too it will display accordingly...

The other pages will be fine as I can downsize them so they will stretch across larger browsers if I am right?

Hope its a lot more clear now? :)

thanks for your help , its most appreciated :)

Images will not get stretched if the browser size changes?
no, a 400x500 image would still be 400x500 regardless of what resolution it is viewed in. the only difference is that in larger resolutions the image would appear smaller.

and as for it becoming pixelated, the image would only become pixelated if the size of the image itself was enlarged.
