Hello,

Most of my parts have arrived this morning except HDD and case so i can't start right at this moment but i just want to get some advice and tips and have a few questions.

1) What is the best way to ground my self and keep myself discharged? (Will be building on a wooden table, on tiled floor)

2) Will i need to update my Computer Bios (Biostar TPower P45)

3) What are jumper pins/hearders on motherboard? Should i not touch anything on mobo just leave how everything is and assemble everything?

4) On my e7400 on the silver service i have what look like a hair fine scratch is this not a problem?

5) Any other tips?

Thanks

1) Touch a bare metal surface.

2) Not heard any need for this, but have a google and see what's available.

3) The only jumper we really need these days is the CMOS jumper, and even that's being phased out. Important pins include the power/reset buttons and status LED, the USB headers, the front panel audio header, as well as the fan headers.

4) No problem.

5) Take your time. Don't rush things. Post here with any problems :)

Agreed

1) Even touching your case is fine, most components are actually pretty hardy and its unlikely static will cause any problems, just keep touching your case now n then if you walk across the carpet or anything, but you dont have to hold onto it through out or anything

2) Very unlikely, its a new board, the only time you need to update the BIOS is with compatibility issues, which happens if you put a new chip in an old board and the board doesnt recognise it, you should be fine

3) Yeah exaclty as reflux said, jumper pinds are pretty much phased out nowadays

4) Same

5) Make sure you have all the bits before you start :D You dont want to get halfway through and find your mobo dint come with X or your Case dint come with Y or something daft like that (only had it once but its annoying when you get halfway through a build and have to stop)

6) Good luck

Thanks for the advice. Looking forward to building it.

Another two question

1)
With the biostar i was given a "free harbor cooler" is this worth putting on?

2)When building it i do assemble processor, heat sink and memory on motherboard outside the case then put it in?

Amazed how big the XFX 4870 is!!

Re 2: Its personal preference, CPU generally is done outside the case. As for heatsink and RAM its whatever suits how you build - the one thing to be wary of though is coolers which require a backplate behind the motherboard.

Hi
Biostar are not known for producing lots of BIOS updates and you shouldn't need to.
I've not flashed the BIOS and am not using the bundled cooler myself, although for extreme Overclocking it may be of benefit. Come back with your BIOS revision once you know it and I will check to see if it is the same as mine.

I put my 1st build together on Saturday. Assembled cpu, cooler, ram, gpu, monitor outside the box 1st and fired it up to make sure there were no probs. Nothing worse than putting it all together inside the case and cabling it all to find you have a duff component

You just turn it on, not connected too a screen or anything?

Also o have 4 x 1GB of memory so am i best of just putting one stick in first then after everything is hopfully installed etc i put the other 3GB in?

Try all your RAM initially as it will more than likely be ok.
If you have problems you can then try removing some, try alternative slots etc. You may even need to set the RAM manufacturers settings in the BIOS but all this is unlikely to be needed.

Shouldn't the case be plugged in with the plug switch off so it earths the case though?

it could be..

if not touching the case will bring you to the same potential difference as the case and everything thats in it to soooo :p

iv never used and ESD equiptment in the shop  unless the boss is watching of course ;)
